It was raining on my way to school.

How fitting.

Gloomy weather for a gloomy situation. I was about to see the faces of people I either couldn't stand or straight up didn't know.

"Can we turn on the radio?"

I glanced to the side at my eleven year old sister, Mia.

"Just because I let you have shotgun does not mean you can turn on the radio"

She let out a loud huff of air, slumping back against the passenger seat and crossing her arms.

My fifteen year old brother, Ed, leaned forward in his seat "the radio?!" He said in disbelief "it's 7:30 in the morning for crying out loud!"

"You had your headphones in at breakfast!" Mia shouted

"I was listening to sad songs, there's a difference"

I rolled my eyes.

"What if I wanted to put on sad songs now?"

"We all know you were gonna turn on some country music" my brother said in dismay.

"What's wrong with country music?!"

"Uh, it's awful"

"No, it's-"

"Eleanor" I said, cutting Mia off, "shut 'em up"

My fourteen year old sister started from where she was sitting next to Ed. She had calmly been reading a book during the whole car ride. It was safe to say she was my least annoying sibling.

"Mia" she started "we'd already established you're not turning on the radio, regardless what you intended to put on. And Ed" she said, turning to my brother, "listening to sad music won't lessen the pain of mom's death, so maybe stop doing that at 7 am every morning" the whole car went dead silent.

Ah, not to mention she was brutally honest.

By the time we arrived at Mia's middle school, Eleanor had quietly gone back to her reading and Ed was slumped against the window beside him. I silently waited for Mia to get out.

When Mia finally realized we'd arrived she stared at me with wide eyes.

"You scared?" I asked, not really sure what else to say.

She shook her head "have a good day, M" she said in a monotone, "Thanks!" She replied cheerily to herself and hopped out.

Was that what mom would say to her?

"Uh, bye" I said after the door was shut and she was almost in the building.

"We'll be late if you just keep staring out the window like that" Ed said, startling me.

I started up the car again and headed towards our high school.

By the time we arrived it was 7:57 and three minutes away before the first bell rang.

The lot was empty except for maybe two cars hastily pulling into empty parking spaces, our car being the third.

After I parked my car I nearly sprinted towards the front doors. I needed to get my schedule and get to class before I was late on my first day.

"Hey, Kid!"

I turned towards the voice.

Gaten Fallbrook was standing there, holding my brother's lunch bag in his hand "you dropped this"

My brother shuffled towards Gaten, looking slightly embarrassed as he retrieved his lunch. I shook my head at him as he began walking beside Gaten, they were conversing and Gaten was laughing at whatever my brother said.

Before either of them could see me I grabbed Eleanor, who had now caught up to me and pulled us both inside.

The first bell sounded and I started sprinting-once again- towards the main office, Eleanor hot on my heels.

By the time we left the office and had our schedules the second bell had sounded as well.

I headed towards my homeroom class in a hurry but stopped short when I realized Eleanor hadn't moved from near the main office.

"Need help getting to your homeroom?" I asked as it hit me that she was a freshman.

"I don't think so...." She said, starting to head in the opposite direction.

"Well, um, good luck" I called after her

She turned back and gave me a brief smile.

Now that was something my mom would've said.
