"It's eight in the morning," Michael groaned from his bed as Luke shuffled through his closet for a shirt.
"I'm aware," Luke says, sorting through his best friend's laundry. He had gone through his own closet ten too many times and found nothing to wear for his visit to Barnes and Noble that morning.
Michael pulls a pillow over his head, muffling his voice. "You really like this girl, don't you?"
Luke stopped in his tracks and raked a hand through his hair. He had already taken a shower and blow dried it up to its regular quiff, but he always seemed to be messing with it one way or another. He shook his head, "No, I don't, Mike."
"Then why the fuck are you awake at the crack of dawn?"
"It's not the crack of dawn—"
"Shut up, idiot." Michael whines, sitting up on his mattress, "Cal walked into your room yesterday while you guys were in there and you were clinging to her for dear life."
"It was just an instinct, I guess." Luke retorted, finding a blue and black flannel on a shelf and shrugging it on over his black T-shirt. He was lying through his teeth and Michael definitely knew it. He'd only known Rhea a week, officially, but it wasn't the first time he thought about his budding feelings.
"Whatever," Michael said, lying back down on his bed. "Just don't be stupid about this, please."
Luke scoffed and walked out of Michael's room towards his own. He quietly tip toed passed Ash and Calum's rooms, knowing they won't be up 'till noon. Rhea crept back into his mind as he sat at the foot of his bed again.
She always seemed to find her way back into his mind some days. Rhea had fallen asleep on his shoulder the night before and it stirred something inside him. His stomach did flips when a tint of red showed in her olive-colored cheeks.
"God damn it," He muttered to himself. He couldn't let himself fall for her, at least not yet.
It was hard, though. Her hair had gotten tangled with his hand when she slept in his arms, but Luke didn't mind. It was the way she smiled in her sleep that got to him. Her pink mouth had turned up in a sort of smirk, as if she was thinking of a witty comeback in her dreams.
She was beautiful.
More than that, actually. The kind of beautiful that can't ever be explained.
I'm turning into a pansy, Luke had thought just as her eyelashes fluttered. He quickly shut his own eyes, pretending to be asleep, as she woke up.
Luke pulled on his favorite pair of black jeans and rushed into the kitchen to see if there was any pizza left from last night, thus causing another stream of thoughts about Rhea. He promptly pushed them aside and dug into the pizza after warming it in the microwave.
Suddenly, the front door slowly opened and Ash walked out of the foyer a few minutes later. He wore the same clothes he had on the night before and his hair was wet from the shower.
He spoke before Luke could question, "Pizza for breakfast?"
Luke nodded, taking a few more bites, "Stayed the night at Misty's?" He wiggled his eyes brow at the boy and Ashton sighed and nodded. "She might as well live here, mate."
Ashton shrugged, ignoring the subject. It was very odd that he didn't jump at the chance of a conversation based on his girlfriend; he normally did. Something was wrong and Luke didn't miss a beat. "You aren't telling me something. Spill it."
Ash walked over to fridge, pulling out a bottled water. "Misty and I were talking," He said, slowly taking a sip of his drink before continuing. It was almost as if he was scared at to what Luke's reaction will be. "And I asked her about Lindy."
Luke stopped in his tracks, "Wh-what?"
Ash nodded, "I'm sorry, I just—she hurt you, Luke. I thought you'd like the closure."
"No," Luke gulped, putting his head in his hands, "I don't."
"She's coming to New York soon."
Luke looks up at the drummer, wide eyed, "Why? Does she want to come and fuck up my life again?"
The other boy cleared his throat, spelling out his name in the condensation of the plastic bottle. "She wants to . . . make it up to you, I suppose."
Luke scoffed at that. Lindy Sinclair wants to make it up to me? Luke thought. Bullshit.
Lindy was Luke's ex-girlfriend, someone he hadn't seen in months since he'd moved from Australia. Someone he'd never wanted to see again. "What would 'making it up to me' do? Huh, ash? You and Misty both know what hell she put me through."
"She put us all through hell." Ashton retorted, pushing his damp hair away from his forehead. "You've been moping for months. Maybe her apology will help you move on—"
"I've moved on." Luke said, maybe a little too sternly. His friend looked taken a back for a second, but recovered moments later.
"To who? Rhea?" Ashton put his elbows on the counter top, "Luke, don't use that girl as your distraction. Don't break her heart."
"She's my friend, Ash." Luke says, staring at the floor, "She's too smart to let me anywhere near her heart, anyway."
"Are you going to see her?" Ash asked, attempting to change the subject. Luke was eternally grateful. When he nodded, the drummer continued, "Don't be stupid."
Luke rolled his eyes and finished off his pizza, getting up to set the dish in the sink. His phone lit up just as he was washing his hands. Ashton grabbed it and read off the text out loud:
Rheee-Ahhh: still comin' 2day? i can't handle sam and char alone
Luke smirked and told Ash to write back a simple, "Yes, of course." As his friend typed away on his phone, Luke dried his hands and sat back down on the counter. Ash passed Luke his phone and he looked at the conversation:
Me: Yes. There's a fest in a few weeks, come with me?
Rheee-Ahhh: sure :)
"IRWIN, I TOLD YOU TO TYPE BACK 'YES"!" Luke yelled out at the treating figure of Ashton, who was already making his way to his bedroom.
Ash giggled, "SHUT UP, HEMMINGS. IT WAS INEVITABLE."
Luke rolled his eyes, Damnit, Ash.
He stared at her text until he decided it was time to leave to see her in person.
