Narrator POV
Cuphead drove through the small neighborhood to reach his two girls. The weekend finally came allowing him to spend some time with them. His schedule always makes him so busy, with trying to make enough money to hopefully have his girls with him. He drove to the house parking his old car by the curb. Grabbing the groceries, he went to the house door.
He knocked on the door alerting his ex mother-in-law, the girls grandma.
"Gracie, get the door." She asked the eldest coughing into her hand. She got up from the couch doing what her grandma asked.
"Who is it?" She asked in a sassy tone. Visitors were rare, and she was the protective type over her grandmother.
"Who is it?" Cup mocked his daughter, teasingly. "It's your daddy, open up." A smile appeared on her face as she told her younger sister their dad was here. She opened the door letting Cup in as they welcomed him with big hugs. The three laughed together, entering the kitchen where their grandma sat.
Cuphead POV
It felt like a century since I last seen my girls. Like last time they came giving me hugs as I brought groceries to the kitchen counter.
"Hey daddy what you bring us?" My youngest asked. I smiled hearing that sass in her voice. My girls were always sassy, but I found it cute unless they were acting up.
"Oh, is that all I'm good for? Can I get some love?" I asked opening my arms making a sad face. She giggled jumping up into my arms. I rested her on my hips as my eldest began talking about school. I helped her on a project recently and she told me she got a B. That's my girl. They asked to go to the movies this weekend and I told them no making their smiles disappear immediately. I told them I would amused they believed I wouldn't. Their smiles came back as they had that excited look in their eyes. I gave them a snack from the grocery bag showing what it was I got. It was some new food for them since they were needing a restock. Their grandma then asked them to go play in the living room so she could talk to me. I chased them into the living room making them laugh as I chuckled myself. I went back to their grandma handing her some extra money for what she may need it for. I proceeded to ask if their mother came by to see the girls yet, but like last time it was a no. She got with some other man who was the "baddest guy around" or so he believes. I shook my head annoyed that she wouldn't make time for her own children. The day she left me, she left the girls in my care as well. It didn't make sense, and she knew without her help I couldn't fully provide for my girls. Thankfully, their grandma was eager to help me. I'm still working on having full custody and responsibility, but it's such a slow process. I looked up as she had asked me to sit down to talk with me. Once I took a seat, she grasped my hand giving me a serious look.
"I need you come with me down to family services right away so you can tell them your taking the girls. I need you to raise them." She told me sternly. I shook my head looking at her.
"Miss, you know I love my girls, but I can't take them. I don't have the ability to take care of them right now." I told her. My small apartment, and small allowance would make it hard, merely impossible. I don't want my girls to struggle. They deserve a steady home.
"Then they'll have to live with their mom."
"You know I don't want that." I sighed, looking down. I can't imagine what would happen to my girls. She'd traumatize them. Make them do things they wouldn't want to, or worse. Corrupt them to be just like her. I don't want that to happen.
"Neither do I! Especially since she been living with that Devil. Trying to be the baddest guy around acting like hes taken Gods place. And shes with him, not a care about anyone else. Do you know what could happen to the girls if they had to live with her?! My lord. Cup please." She begged grabbing my arm.
"Miss I-.. I-"
"I have cancer! I am dying Cup!" She said her voice cracking. I looked at her shocked. Tears developed in her brown eyes. I was never informed of this.
"I've been holding on for those girls as long as I can, but I'm so tired." She whimpered out leaning back in her seat. I looked at the table. She never said anything about having cancer. I don't know what I can do to help her with this. It does explain all the medication and how sick she gets. She's probably in a stage near death, why else would she bring this up in such urgency?
"Why didn't you tell me? Or say something I could've helped you. Miss its going to be alright." I said grabbing her arm softly rubbing it with my thumb. She looked at me with a serious face.
"Its not going to be alright." She said. I pulled my arm away looking at the table. Her meds, an ashtray, and a cup of tea sat there. Everyone has moments of despair, and weakness, but this one hit me so hard. The fact she was so sick and I couldn't do anything to help me. This woman is a godsend, she's helped with so much including raising my daughters. The pain was to real, and I realize I need to prepare myself for what will come.
It wasn't long till she passed on. I stood with my girls holding them close to me as they lowered their grandma down into the dirt. I couldn't contact Alice about her mother, she wouldn't answer me. No one seemed to be able to reach her. So it was up to me to prepare everything, which I didn't mind. It just made me so furious that Alice wouldn't do this. After the coffin was lowered and covered, we walked to the car, my brother Mugs, and friend Boris walked near. A car pulled up right behind mine, and out came Alice.
"Why didn't any of you tell me?!" She yelled slamming the door shut. I guess she finally got word from the papers. My youngest daughter began to cry seeing her mother. Gracie pulled her away getting her into the car. Alice ran over trying to pull my girls away from my car. I pulled Alice's hand off telling her to quit. That father instinct kicked in to protect my babies. She didn't oblige as she tried pulling my youngest, Julianah, out of the car. I pulled her arm away, hearing my daughter scream in fear of being taken by her mom, I would've smacked her had I not had good morals.
"You haven't been to see our girls in years! You wanna come take them now!?" I shout at her as she sneered at me in disgust.
"Get your hands off of me!" She growled pulling her arm out of my grasp. I shook my head directing my daughter Gracie into the car. Alice's new boyfriend, Sammy, got out of the car trying to tell me back up from her. I told him shut up as the argument between us three began spiraling up. Mugs then but in telling all of us to stop, and he then directed his attention to Alice.
"Are you serious right now? This is your mom's funeral. You know she wanted the girls to go with him. You won't take care of them. You have your head to far up your ass to realize the care these girls need." Mugs said going off at her. She glared down at my brother pointing a finger at him. I watched intensely if she would dare touch him.
"Listen her Mugman. These are my kids damn it! No one is taking them from me!" She turned to me, so I got in the car. While I started up my car and began to drive off, she walked by my car pointing at me while she yelled.
"Listen save your money because were going to court you hear me!" She yelled banging the top of my car as I increased my speed, her figure disappearing in my side mirror. Shes not taking my kids. I'm going to fulfill what their grandma wanted.
