In 15 Seconds

Lunch and 3 agonizingly slow subjects later, I was impatiently tapping my pen on the desk, during my last period, English, which I shared with James. I glanced at him seated beside me, and I could tell he was also impatient, as he was not-so-discreetly watching the clock. I eventually looked at the clock too. 13 minutes left... I thought to myself. Our teacher had some errands to do, so she left us with an essay to write. I already finished mine, which left me with nothing to do. I figured I could sketch ideas for painting to pass the time. The outside world always seems to disappear when I'm doing art, much like when I'm staring at the sky. I guess, as cheesy as it sounds, when you see something you love, you see nothing else.

I let my thoughts wander back to this morning, when words were left unsaid, but somehow understood. It may be cliché, a trick of fate, coincidences lining up with one another, or just pure luck. It doesn't really matter, though. I'd rather have that than nothing at all.

By the time the bell shook me out of my thoughts, I found myself staring at a sketched face of the one that's been plaguing my thoughts for majority of the day since that fortunate encounter. After getting over my initial shock and embarrassment, I noticed that I actually did pretty decently.

"Wha'chu drawing?" I slammed my notebook shut as a rosy pink stained my cheeks. "N-Nothing!" I loudly exclaimed as a smirk grew on my intruder's face, who was, no surprise, James. He snickered lightly as he stood from his seat, swinging his bag across his shoulders as he walked to the front of my desk. "You were drawing Mason, weren't you?" He innocently asked. When my face grew impossibly redder he laughed victoriously. "I knew it! Someone's in lo~ve!" He teased as I shoved my stuff into my bag and glaring at him with all the force I could muster in this flustered state.

"You're being a bit too cocky today. Any reason?" I begrudgingly asked, as we both walked out the classroom. "Oh, I don't know. Just celebrating the fact I finally got one on you." He responded cheekily. I turned my head towards him, and met his glinting eyes with a disbelieving stare. I realized he wasn't talking about the sketch, and I grew confused. We were near the exit of the school now, and my curiosity only grew stronger.

"Okay, spill the beans." I finally asked. He looked at me with an eyebrow raised, still smirking by the way, and casually said, "Well, I invited him over today too."

It felt like the world dropped beneath my feet. I suddenly didn't remember how to breathe. It's times like these I have to question why my anxiety gets me in the worst of times. "You. Did. What?" I painstakingly gritted out. "I invited him over!" James happily responded. If I weren't so irritated, I would've warned him to run. "I grew tired of you guys dancing around each other for too long. It's time to actually talk to each other! Or more, if you know what I mean." He said, while wagging his eyebrows playfully. Speak for yourself! A part of me that wasn't panicking thought. My anger dissipated but that was because my anxiety grew stronger. I felt like hyperventilating. Instead, I took a few long breaths and tried to remember how to calm down. The whole ordeal lasted 15 seconds. At the exact 16th second, I burst into tears.

also this chapter was supposed to just skip to the stargazing stuff but i realized
