Once a tragedy occurs, it's only a matter of time before you get over it and move on with your life. Five years ago, my country was gassed by an enemy country, killing 99.9% of the population like an antibacterial wipe. I was 16 at the time, and without notice, my ex-military father threw me into his bunker with my new puppy and made me promise not to leave for a week. Through the tears, I begged him not to leave, but the door was quickly slammed and I never saw him alive again. A week passed slower than anything I'd ever experienced, and when I emerged, I found the corpses of my parents in each others' embrace in the living room, the glass of all the windows smashed and the air thick with a deathly smell. In my father's hand was a gas mask and a note:

'If you followed my instructions, you will hopefully be alive to read this. I got wind of an attack and knew only one of us could survive. Your mother and I decided that we wouldn't be able to live with ourselves if it wasn't you. Now, although you must be distressed, I need you to put your strong, military head on for me. Put this gas mask on and try not to take it off for at least a month until the gas has fully cleared. As you know, there's at least a year's worth of non-perishable food in the bunker, which you will need to ration to last you as long as possible. If no one else survives, you will likely have free access to any shops, where you can replenish your supply. Don't eat too much sugar, you're going to need to stay healthy if you want to survive.

An eternity of love,

Mum and dad xxx

P.S: Don't forget to walk and feed the dog '

It took me a good hour or two to get through the note through my tears. Both my parents and probably all my friends are dead. How am I supposed to survive without them? I need them!

As the weeks progressed, I had raided all the local convenience stores for all non-perishable food, as well as anything else I could preserve in the freezer. The good thing about having a paranoid ex-military father is that he has prepared for a literal apocalypse. Our roof is completely covered in military-grade solar panels, and with smart use of energy, this means I can keep the fridge and freezer running at all times.

If it wasn't for my dog, I would never have survived and definitely gone insane. She kept me company, gave me lots of love and companionship, and even makes quite the conversationalist; one-sided conversations are still conversations. Every day I took her for walks or runs, to keep both of us in shape. I don't know what I would do without her.

Now, I'm an expert in this new life. It's been five years and I haven't seen a single other human being alive. I had the bodies of my parents buried in the back garden, with tombstones decorated with the precision of someone with a whole lifetime of solitude. I miss them every day, but seeing their graves gives me the strength to carry on. What would the point of their deaths be if I just gave up? Nothing. So I carry on, for them.

One day, as I was running with my dog when I heard a strange noise. I wondered if the enemy had returned to check for survivors. I had heard their ships a few times over the years, but I've always been lucky enough to be at home. I quickly ducked into a bush and hoped I wouldn't be spotted. As the noise got louder, I realized the sound wasn't, in fact, a helicopter or plane. It was...

A car.

A car? A car needs a living driver, who's there? I thought no one else was alive? There's someone else! I'm not alone! I stayed hidden, in case the vehicle belonged to the enemy but kept a keen eye to see if I could get a glimpse of the driver as they came past. In the split second they were in my hindered view from inside the bush, all I made out was a pale creature with short dark hair. Definitely human. I called for my dog and began following the car. It wasn't too hard since there was literally no other noises aside from my own footsteps. Once I caught up to the car, I was able to get a better glimpse of the driver.
