All Hallow's Eve

It was a chilly autumn night with the moon as high as it could be. If the street lights weren't shining as brightly as they were, the full moon would have illuminated the streets for all those wandering October thirtieth. It was eleven at night, and a high school girl was riding her black B.M.X bike down the empty streets. She had black metal blasting in her headphones as she raced down to a beaten path she knew was hidden from everyone in the town. She wouldn't be found out by anyone in her mission. Skidding onto a sidewalk, the teenager pedaled down a paved path and turned into a gravel pathway shrowded by weeds and vines. The girl had trouble going through the plants on her bike, so she hid it in the weeds where no one except her could find it. On foot, she adjusted the black backpack she wore and journeyed forth. The teenager popped one earbud out of her ear and listened to the woods. Her heart raced faster than it had when she was riding her bike. The forest was dense. Looking up, she couldn't see the stars. With a gulp, the teenager realized she didn't quite think her plan through.

"Fuck," she swore under her breath. "Luna, you are an idiot."

Luna rubbed her tired eyes and walked forward instead of turning back. She was determined to go through with this plan of hers. Luna adjusted the black hiking boots she always wore to be tighter and headed deeper into the forest. She took out her other earbud and jumped when she walked into a spider's web. Luna swung her arms out in front of her and then wiped her shirt, worried about having a spider on her body. When that was over, Luna decided to pull her flashlight out of her backpack. Turning it on, Luna widened the light beam and swung it around, cautious of her surroundings. Coyotes were known to lurk at this time of night, and she did not want to get injured on this night. Luna took a calming breath and looked at her path. She turned her light to the watch on her left wrist and saw it was eleven-fifteen now.

Luna hurried through the forest, her backpack bouncing on her back as loud as drums. The harmony of the season's last crickets and the chatter of bats surrounded Luna like a theme song. The thumps of deer running away made Luna image how magical it would be to have the deer run with her to her destination or have a familiar dash alongside her like a faithful companion. Luna stopped to catch her breath and look around with her flashlight. An owl hooted above her. It made Luna shine her light up to see two big yellow eyes shining down at her. The large great horned owl bellowed a bemused hoot deep in its chest before taking off on silent wings. Luna awed at its grace as it flew, wanting desperately to know what it was like to be able to fly. She went back on her path and saw a clearing.

"Yes!" she whispered loudly.

Luna hurried to the edge of the large clearing, noticing how the moonlight illuminated the tall green grass. A gentle wind made the blades bow to the right, but the trees didn't rustle their drying leaves. Luna felt colder than she had been earlier. Shining her flashlight on her watch, she saw it was eleven-forty-five. Luna took off her shoes and set them by an old birch tree. She put her socks in each boot as well. The last thing Luna wanted was to have leaves and small twigs in her boots attached to her socks. When she set her backpack and flashlight aside with the shoes, she grabbed a candle, a lighter, and a Hershey bar. When Luna stepped foot into the clearing, the grass stopped flowing. Suddenly, the grass before her parted like the Red Sea in Exodus, showing her a stone path dotted with moss and small vines.

"Wow," Luna said aloud in awe.

Looking up, she saw the legendary rock that covered a grave.

"The witch's grave," she whispered.

Luna hurriedly lit the candle and slowly walked towards the large memorial. Luna put the lighter in her pocket and held the candle with both hands as if in a ceremony. When she got about three feet in front of it, Luna got on her knees and set the candle before her. The flame illuminated the pentagram carving that trapped the demon underneath it. Luna knew it was supposed to catch the soul of the Ravenport Witch, but Luna also knew of a way to get the soul to grant her wish.

"The Witch of Ravenport, I am Luna Ravenport, a descendant of Harold Ravenport, the founder of the town. I wish to know your true power! Destroy the all the residents of this land and all its people for they have treated us as pariahs!" Luna prayed.

She closed her eyes and bowed before the stone. Luna put her hands on either side of the candle, hoping that something would grant her wish. She felt the candle's heat grow more and more. Eventually, it felt like it was burning her hands, so Luna opened her eyes to pull her hands to her chest. That's when she saw the candle was engulfed in blue fire. Luna checked her watch; it was twelve o'clock precisely. She watched in terror as the flames then snaked on the dry ground and slithered up through the cracks in the large stone. She watched it fill each piece of the carvings and saw the flames change into a plethora of colors. Suddenly, the rock began to crack and crumble. Luna covered her face with her arms just as it started to shiver and explode with a loud boom!

Luna was thrown back, and the wind was knocked out of her lungs, making it hard for her to get a breath. She closed her eyes and prayed to whatever deity watching this episode that she would be safe. As she gasped, her ears rung loud enough that she didn't notice the footsteps approaching her.

"Hey, you alright?" asked a young man's voice.

Luna looked up at the man and coughed dryly, feeling a little light headed. Luna furrowed her brows and grew confused. She was expecting a ghost in old clothes, not a man who looked like he came from a Hot Topic. The man had natural blonde hair, purple eyes, and wore a white shirt with a black flannel shirt over it. He also wore dark jeans and boots similar to Luna's. What made Luna even more confused was that the man had large purple wings folded behind him almost like he was wearing a curtain of feathers. He knelt and reached out a hand, his short nails painted black.

"Thanks for calling me. I needed a vacation," said the man.

"Uh..."

"Oh, where are my manners? I'm Lucifer," said the man.

"Uh...!"

Luna scrambled up against a tree with her jaw wide open. Lucifer chuckled lightly and brushed a blue flame off his shoulder as he stood. He had to be near six-feet in height, and he was lean, almost like the birch Luna was leaning against.

"Yeah, I don't blame you for being shocked. What's your name, kid?"

Luna's eyes rolled in the back of her head, and she passed out.
