“Uh hi, Luke,” I said in response my scanning the trees quickly for Nathan and the guys.

“Don’t worry, there isn’t anyone around for miles. But I think you knew that already,” Luke said in his soft voice.

“Luke, I spoke with Logan, he told me everything. How could you?” I asked trying to hide my uncomfortableness.

“Oh he did, did he?” Luke said as he circled me slowly, “So you’re not afraid of what I have become.”

“No, not of what you have become, but of what you did. How could you kill Scott – your best friend!?”

“It was an accident! I had no idea what was happening to me after I was turned. The thirst was so unbearable. Scott happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I think about it and I feel absolutely horrible. You didn’t see his face as he was dying. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

“And my brother – you attacked him, nearly killed him too,” I tried to slowly advance farther up the path.

“Well that was unintentional as well. Crystal, I never wanted to hurt your family, least of all you. You were my world, my everything.”

“But it was Logan! The last good thing I had in my life!” I shouted.

“At least he survived the change,” he said simply.

“Why are you here Luke?” I asked.

“I want you back in my life. I’ve stayed away so I can control my thirst better. I now see why these guys live in the woods far away from everyone else.”

“They do it so they can hunt animals, not humans,” I stated defending them.

“Regardless, you’re mine, my only true love. Don’t you see? We can be together again at last. I can turn you into a vampire and we can be together forever. Wouldn’t you like that?” Luke asked me blocking the path once again.

It felt like I was reliving the conversation I had with Nathan last night except being on the flip side. It was strange getting this proposition from Luke, it was what I wanted. But I didn’t want to get turned by Luke the thought of it sickened me. I decided to use Nathan’s words as my ammo.

“I don’t think so Luke. I don’t want to become a monster like you,” I said.

He almost seemed hurt, “I only left because I loved you so much I had to protect you from me. You have to forgive me of that. I’m back, here right now for you. We were meant to be together, ever since we were kids.”

“What if I don’t want to be a vampire? I’m sick and tired of everything thinking they can make decisions for me!” my anger surfacing again, “No one ever asks for my opinion regarding anything, yet they think they know what’s best for ME? Well how about I get a say for once? Last time I checked it is my fricken life!”

Luke stood there staring at me and then started laughing.

“What?!” I shouted at him.

He was nearly bent over in laughter, “You– ” he laughed some more, “you changed.”

I crossed my arms, but he laughed even harder, “Oh and I missed your pouty face!”

“I have changed for the better I think, thanks to you,” I retorted. “Besides I’m with Nathan now Luke, and I love him. I have moved on!”

A dark shadow crossed his face, “Oh and wouldn’t you just like to know, that all of this” and he gestured to himself, “is all of Nathan’s fault?”

I was silenced at once and my arms involuntarily dropped to my sides.

“I bet your wonderful new boyfriend didn’t tell you that. Yeah, Crystal, wake up. All this shit going on in your life right now, Logan becoming a vampire, people chasing after you… it would have never happened had Nathan and the Wanted came here. They should’ve stayed back on the other side of the pond and not came to America,” Luke spat.

“That’s not true, you’re lying,” I said.

“He’s the liar! I dare you to ask him,” he sneered.

“It’s not true!” I screamed.

In a gust of air he was inches from my face, “How about this, you go ask your perfect Nathan about what I just told you. I guarantee he won’t be able to look you in the eyes. In fact I can bet on it.”

I just shook my head.

“Once you find out the truth about Nathan and how he made a total mess out of all our lives, you’ll be begging to come back to me.”

Luke’s eyes glowed in anger. And then in a blur he was gone. But the echo of his words still hung thick in the air, “you’ll be begging to come back to me.”

My legs trembled as I fought to stay upright. I found I couldn’t move until I finally heard the normal sounds of the forest again bringing me back to my senses. Not waiting a second longer, I sprinted back to the house to look for some answers.
