I opened my eyes. I picked up my cell phone on the night table and saw it read 2:16 a.m. I had only slept for a few hours. Nathan still hadn’t returned to the bedroom. I lay there and listened. I didn’t hear any unusual sounds. I wasn’t sure why I woke up – nor did I remember dreaming. I tried closing my eyes to fall back asleep, but I was wide awake! Frustrated, I got up from the bed, stretched, and walked to the window. The moonlight shone high in the night sky creating diamond-like sparkles on the lake. I touched the ring on my hand and smiled.
Everything was so still that I almost missed the slight movement from down below. Because the room was so high, I really had to get close to the glass to stare down below. With my nose practically pressed to the window I saw that it was a person looking at me. Thinking it was Nathan I waved. But then I noticed that the eyes weren’t golden.
Maybe it’s one of the guys.
The figure waved at me in return but didn’t move.
I squinted, I could barely make out the silhouette of the shaggy hair and decided it was Jay. Grabbing a lightweight robe I made my way downstairs. I didn’t hear any more sounds from the basement studio. The lights were out and the house was pretty quiet. It made sense now, they had gone out to hunt which is why they were outside.
I opened the front door and walked down the sidewalk in my bare feet toward Jay.
“Hey what ya up to?” I asked.
“Hi Crystal,” Jay said.
I froze in my tracks and my heart almost stopped beating. The voice didn’t belong to Jay. I had almost forgotten what he sounded like. It was the last sound I ever thought I would hear again. He started walking towards me out of the shadows and into the moonlight. I could see his face clearly now. Luke. He hadn’t changed much except for his hair which had grown slightly shaggy.
“Hi baby, I told you I would be back for you some day,” he said reaching for me.
But I took a step back, “I’m dreaming again, aren’t I?”
Luke laughed softly, “No Crystal, it’s me and I’m really here.” He stepped forward and touched my arm. It was warm, and it felt real.
I shook my head, “How? Why? What? What are you doing here?”
“I heard about your house and found out you were living here at this place. I missed you so much and couldn’t wait to see you,” he said trying to hold me.
But I avoided his touch and took step back, “I don’t understand.”
“Is it true you’re with another guy?” Luke said with a pained expression.
Suddenly I was angry, “Hey, you were the one who left me remember? You ‘didn’t want me anymore’ you said. That was the worst day of my life!”
