It was the second week of school during third period when a guy walked in. He was tall with spiky black hair and had square black glasses that made his bright blue eyes seem even brighter. He nervously walked over to the teacher and quietly talked to her, she nodded and said to him, "You can sit next to August. August, raise your hand so he can find you." I raised my hand and watched the tall boy walk to the desk next to me and set his stuff down on the desk before sitting himself. He nervously glanced over at me as he looked at his stack of books with his hands in his hoodie pocket.
A few minutes later, the teacher decided to take attendance. She started, "When I say your name, keep your hand up until everyone's name has been called," she looked around the room as she began the calling of names. Within minutes, she said, "Put your hands down," she looked around once again before continuing, "Sara Hangler, Alek Køhler, Hailey Kandran?" The three put their hands up and I watched how hesitant the new kid was. Alek was his name, it suited him. Ms. Hasler said, "Okay, hands down. Kason Kanhg, August Long, Anna Lasoner?" I quickly raised my hand and waited. Over the course of a few more minutes, everyone was accounted for and the rest of the class was ours.
Glancing over at Alek, I noticed that he was looking at sheet music. I tapped him on the shoulder and he jumped a bit. He looked over at me and I whispered, "You in band?" He nodded, I continued, "What instrument do you play? My sister plays flute." He softly whispered back, "I also play flute." He looked down like he expected me to laugh or make fun of him. Smiling, I replied, "Cool. At lunch, maybe we can discuss if you could help my sister practice?" As he nodded, I thought I saw a faint smile appear on his face. 'God, I wish I could take a picture; its so cute and shy looking. No, that would be creepy or weird,' I thought. Looking over again, I saw that he had put the music away and was writing on a note card. Alek must've caught me watching him because he looked over and smiled again.
When the bell rang, I saw him quickly gather his things before quickly heading to his next class. I managed to catch up to him and greeted, "Hey, again. What class are you going to?" Looking at his paper, he responded, "Study hall. Um, do you think you could show me where that is?" I smiled widely, " Sure thing. Follow me!" Without thinking, I grabbed his hand and speed walked to the classroom with him. I glanced up and saw a light blush dusted on his cheeks.
