In study hall, the August found a map of the school. He dragged his desk next to Alek's and set it where their desks met. The redhead looked at the map as he whispered, "Can I have your schedule?" Alek looked in one of his binders and pulled out the wrinkled paper, handing it to August. Alek watched closely as August took different colored pens and drew lines to each of his classes from his locker. August had even drawn a line to his locker. Alek noticed and pointed at it as he whispered, "Is that your locker?" August nodded, "Yep. We can go there on our way to lunch, if you'd like." Nodding, Alek replied in a nervous whisper, "I'd like that..."
When the bell rang, it was time for the two boys to go to their fifth hour class, which they didn't have together. Alek had AP History and our dear August had Chemistry for the second year in a row because he had failed it his sophomore year.
Anyway, as Alek was walking up the stairs, the person in front of him suddenly stopped, causing the tall boy to run into them. The short girl turned to glare at him as she growled, "Watch it, loser." Alek hesitantly apologized and continued his way to class. Once he was there, he found his seat and waited patiently for class to start.
When August walked into the Chemistry room, he was greeted by one of his friends, Danny. Danny loudly yelled his way, "Eyyy, it's mah boy, August! What have you been up to, dude?" August put his books down and high-fived his friend as he answered, "I've been talking to the new kid. He's sitting with us at lunch; you cool with that?" Danny responded, "Yeah, yeah that's cool with me." As class started, August's mind started to wander. He thought, 'I wonder how Alek's doing? Did he make it to class okay?' His thoughts were interrupted by the teacher. "Mr. Long, would you like to share whatever you've been thinking about?" Straightening up, August replied, "Sure, I was wondering if the cute new kid found his way to class all right." The teacher ignored him and went back to teaching.
In AP History, Alek was called on by the teacher. "Alek, is it? Would you please go up and introduce yourself to the class?" Nodding shyly, the tall bean walked to the front of the room. He nervously began, "Hi, I'm Alek Køhler and before anyone asks, I'm about six feet and three inches tall. I'm from Greenland, I guess that's all?" When he sat at his desk, he placed his hands in his hoodie pockets and looked at his desk for the rest of class. As the bell rang, he looked at the map and noticed that August's locker was a few feet away from this class. Taking his time, he walked over and waited next to the locker.
A minute or two later, August showed up. He smiled when he saw Alek waiting for him, but he asked, "Do you need anything from your locker before we head to the cafeteria?" Alek shook his head no. August got what he needed and took Alek's hand. As they walked, Alek heard a few people whisper and shoot them glances. August seemed to ignore it or he seemed used to it. Alek, on the other hand, was somewhat uncomfortable, so he managed to wiggle his hand out of August's grasp. The ginger looked up at him, "You okay?" Again, Alek shook his head, but he also spoke softly, "It's-it's just I don't like all the people whispering and looking at us..." August smiled softly, "I understand. We can eat in the bathroom or next to your locker, if you'd like." Alek nodded, so August replied, "Next to your locker it is." Alek smiled a little as the shorter boy led him to his locker.
At the locker, they boys sat on the ground. Between them sat August's lunchbox, a bottle of water, a juice-box, a sandwich, a couple of brownies, and a small box of cereal. Taking the sandwich out of the bag, August tore it in half and gave half to Alek. Alek took small bites of it, while August had shoved it all in his mouth (as it demonstrating his skill to his potential partner ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ). August tossed the juice-box to Alek, who somehow didn't catch it. He picked it up and took small sips of it, causing August to comment, "Cute..." Alek blushed a bit and continued to eat his sandwich.
Glancing at his phone, August saw that the bell was about to ring. He told Alek and the boys quickly finished consuming their lunch. When the bell did ring, Alek stood up first and held out his hand for August to take; he did, so Alek pulled him up before opening his locker, which was neatly organized. While gathering his books, Alek asked, "Can I call you something like Auggie?" With a beaming smile, Auggie answered, "Yes, yes you can."
