It was Friday. August had a basketball game and was dressed in a white shirt with a red tie that had white cats on it. Alek saw him and smiled as he greeted, "You look nice. Are you going to a funeral after school?" August grinned, "Do I not look nice everyday?" "No, no, you look great everyday..." Auggie continued, "Anyway, I have a game tonight. You going?" The tall one answered as he gripped his books, "Yep, the pep band is at almost every home game, or so I've been told."
As the two headed to their English 11 class, Alek hesitantly held Auggie's hand. August glanced up at him and smiled a bit as he noticed the rosy blush on Alek's face. In the classroom, they set their stuff down and met in the middle of the room to talk for a bit.
"So, did you finish reading the book last night?," August asked. Alek replied in his usual soft voice, "Yeah, it actually gets really interesting near the end when-" he was cut off by the teacher, "The bell rang, so please take your seats." She waited while everyone meandered to their desks and sat. From his desk by the window, Alek looked over to August who had already started a conversation with the girl next to him.
As the day wore on, the boys hardly had the chance to talk. At lunch, Alek asked August, "In English, who was the girl you were talking to?" August replied as he continued to work on his homework due in his next class, "Oh, that was my ex. She's one of the cheerleaders, so she was asking what cheers get us the most hyped up." Alek didn't reply, so he continued, "Why did you ask? Could you be... jealous?" Alek finally responded, "I-I'm not jealous. I just wanted to know who she was..." "Sure ya did," was all August replied before the bell rang.
In the boys' seventh period class, they took notes. Alek lightly elbowed August to get his attention. The ginger looked over and saw that Alek had written something on the paper. It was a question about the girl. August sighed and wrote his answer under the question.
At the end of the class, they headed to their lockers to get their stuff. August rushed to his sister's locker to get her, then dragged her to Alek's locker. Alek slammed his locker shut before turning to see his ginger haired boy and a shorter brown curly haired girl. She waved slightly. He responded with a slight nod as August introduced her. "Pandora, this is Alek. Alek this is my little sister. Is it alright if she goes home with you so she has a ride to the school for band tonight?" The black haired boy nodded. Before he left, Auggie gave Alek a quick hug that left Alek blushing. Pandora giggled as she noticed the blush on her brother's "friend"'s face. Alek managed to somewhat compose himself before leading Pandora out to the parking lot.
In the car, Pandora asked Alek, "So, are you going to the game tonight just to see August?" Alek answered, "Nah, I'm going for pep band. Seeing August is just a major bonus." Pandora seemed to have gotten a bit excited as she asked another question, "You're in pep band, too?! What do you play? Ooh, I bet it's percussion or maybe tuba or bari." Chuckling, Alek replied as he parked in his driveway, "You're actually wrong. I play flute. I'm first chair in concert band." "Wow! You must be really good!" He said with a barely noticable smile, "Thanks."
As they walked into the house, the boy said, "Go ahead and eat anything in the kitchen, but stay quiet because my mom is probably sleeping." Nodding, the girl jogged away to go find the kitchen.
Around five o'clock, Alek came out of his room to go look for Pandora. He headed to the kitchen and found her talking to his mom. With a bright smile, Alek's mom greeted him, "Alek, why didn't you tell me you had a boyfriend?" He felt his face growing red as he softly responded, "I-I don't have a boyfriend. I mean, I have a friend, that is a boy, but we're nothing more..." She laughed, "You're so funny, Al. Pandora has told me all about how close you and her brother are. You should show me some pics some time." He chuckled nervously, "Uh, yeah, maybe sometime. Anyway, Pandora and I need to head to the game now. Bye, mom, I'll be back around ten to elevenish. Love ya." With that he quickly walked out the door with Pandora trailing behind him. As he drove, she commented, "Your mom is really pretty and super nice." He didn't exactly know how to respond, so all he said was, "Thanks."
Once at the school, the two nerds headed to the band room. Alek got his flute out and put together before heading to the closet to get his shirt. Once he acquired his binder, he sat down at the end of the row and waited for the rest of his section. After tuning and warming up his section, Alek made sure they were ready to practice a few songs. All of his section were new to pep band because they were eighth and ninth graders, thus why they didn't know the music. He helped them as best as he could and after forty-five minutes of practicing, they were ready to go out. The boy made sure his "children" didn't drop anything as everyone made their way to the bleachers. Once they were set up, they waited for the varsity game to begin.
When they were announcing the players, Alek could've sworn that he saw August wink at him, but who knows, he could have been just blinking. As the game wore on, Alek had a great time with his "children" as they took group selfies (groupies?) and talked. While he was looking at the scoreboard, he heard one of the girls say, "Mom, mom, look at the players!" He looked and saw that August was on the floor. He watched as Auggie was helped up and limped to his chair.
August had been pushed to the ground and twisted his ankle, sort of causing a domino effect, so someone else fell onto his ankle. As he was helped to his seat, he insisted that it would be fine after the game or at half time. From his seat, he could see Alek and Pandora's worried faces watching him. As he did finger guns and a wink at Alek, he thought he saw him smile. Alek had seen him and was smiling widely at him. He returned the finger guns and wink and got August to laugh.
At half time, August was helped to the room where they checked out the injuries. Meanwhile, Alek and Pandora were getting ready to play some music. Alek counted rests out loud for his "children" because they had issues counting. After the song was finished, he looked down at them, "You guys sounded pretty good. Just be a bit more confident and during rests, be somewhat energetic." Pandora nodded, while Hanna did finger guns and replied, "You got it, dude." He smiled a bit.
As half time ended and the third quarter started, the players returned. August had been told that he shouldn't play for the rest of the game. He could understand why, but it put him into a sort of bad mood. He crossed his arms and leaned back in his seat while he watched the game go on. At one point, he glanced down at his wrapped ankle and felt bad that he couldn't help his teammates. Looking across the gym, he saw Alek and Pandora going to get food from the concession stand. He looked at the manager behind him and said, "I'm gonna run to the bathroom real quick." The manager only replied, "Walk, don't run." Nodding, the ginger limped away.
By the concession stand, Alek had bought Pandora a pretzel and lemonade and himself a water and Skittles. As they talked, August found them and went up behind Alek. Pandora saw, but he put a finger in front of his mouth. She nodded slightly and continued her conversation. August smiled widely as he hugged the tall boy from behind. Alek smiled a bit and turned in his arms. "How's your ankle? Are you okay? Should I carry you home?" August laughed and replied to Alek, "Yeah, I'm gucci. Wait, would you actually carry me?" Alek nodded and saw August's smile widen. August got on his toes and gave our tall bean a quick kiss on the nose before scampering back to his seat. Pandora looked up at Alek with an amused look on her face, "You okay?" He nodded and used one hand to cover his blushing face. They went back to their seats and continued to watch. Every once in a while, August and Alek would make eye contact, causing Alek to blush slightly.
By the end of the game, their team had lost. As the band headed back to the band room, Pandora said to Alek, "August is gonna be in a terrible mood, ya know." Alek nodded. He knew exactly what he needed to do. After they got everything neatly put away, they went to go wait for Auggie.
When he came out of the locker room, he was clearly angry about something. Alek smiled softly at him, while Pan kept her distance. He had his arms crossed as he followed the two to the car. He was about to get in, but Alek was lightly holding his arm. He looked down at the ginger with a light blush dusting his cheeks as he leaned down and hesitantly kissed his lips. August dropped his bags and wrapped his arms around Alek as he kissed him back. Alek had pulled away first and didn't say anything as he went to get in the car. The ride to August and Pandora's house was silent, except for the radio playing softly in the background. Once at their house, Alek parked the car and waited for them to get out. Pandora did and August started to open the door, but not before saying, "Love you, Al." With that he shut the door and jogged into the house with his stuff.
Wow, this was the longest chapter I've ever successfully written. This whole chapter was 1741 words.I hope you liked it. Also, would anyone be interested in me posting Alek and Auggie's schedules?
