By the time I finally got home from work it was way later than usual. My shift ran into overtime by at least three hours since there was an 'emergency' in the stock room that supposedly only I could sort out. Why was it that on a sunny Friday I was the only competent person working the afternoon shift?
With an unsatisfied groan of exertion, I kicked off my shoes and put my phone on charge for the night, intensely glad when I was able to flop onto my comfortable bed. I'd spend the last five minutes slogging through my night routine, getting into pyjamas and brushing my teeth and whatnot. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, even when they're half dead and swaying on their sore feet, right?
Unfortunate, but true. But the moment my head hit those silky pillow covers and my body sank into the soft mattress, my problems melted into bliss as I let sleep take over for some well-needed rest.

Just when I was about to kick off the ground and fly, a shrill scream caused me to be ripped from my interesting dream and thrown back to reality.
The second I breathed in, I was immediately hacking up a lung as a burning sensation scratched at my lungs. My eyes watered when I rubbed them, but when they focused I quickly realised it wasn't sleep causing them to water. Smoke was filtering into my room underneath the closed door, and a thick layer of it had gathered against the roof.
"Oh shit, oh shit-" The panicked curses left my mouth as I scrambled out of bed, grabbing my phone off charge and shoving it into the pocket of my running shorts, which I'd conveniently worn to bed as pyjamas last night. Well, as I briefly glanced at the alarm clock sitting on my nightstand, I'd only been asleep for a few hours.
Slipping on an old pair of sneakers I proceeded to rush out of my room, only to be hit in the face by more smoke. My apartment was being consumed by flames, and they seemed to lick up the walls quicker with each second that passed. The heat from the flames was already causing a headache to form, but I pushed past that in order to focus on staying alive.
Going to the only available window that wasn't blocked by fire, I could see the Griffin Rock rescue team far below on the ground. Now that I was closer to the window, I could also hear the police sirens and the screams of my neighbours as they begged to be rescued by our resident firefighter, Kade Burns.
I tried to open the window, but it was stuck. Even banging on the window and screaming to try and get their attention did nothing since I was five floors up from the rescue team. "Fuck, what can I do, I can't just die in here!" As breathing got a little harder, I tugged the neckline of my t-shirt up to cover my nose, which made breathing a tiny bit easier.
It gave me a few seconds more to come up with a plan. The only way out would be the stairwell. Perhaps the roof, but that would be plan B. For my own sake, I prayed that the former plan would be my escape route. Running through my apartment and dodging burning plaster that fell from the roof, I made it to the front door, shoving it open.
The fire was consuming the hallway just as it was consuming my apartment, and by the looks of it, the stairwell was completely blocked off by fallen debris and a roaring bonfire. "God fucking damnit," I snapped to myself, blood pumping through me at the speed of a formula one race car. I had to get out of here. And the roof was now my only chance, no matter how badly I wished it wasn't.
