[James's Perspective]

We start to walk to the hotel that Calsiphir directed us to. But before we arrive I drift to the back where David is walking, looking a bit depressed.

"What was that before, with Calsiphir?" I ask, remembering him storming off, leaving us to make our way to the hotel by ourselves.

David shakes his head, making no attempt to answer.

"What's wrong? Did he yell at you? He better not have yelled at you or I'll punch his bloody face in."

"There's something deeply wrong here James." He says quietly. "I don't know what could be so wrong. But I want to at least find out what's going on here"

"What makes you think there's anything more than a few nut-heads, here?" I ask.

"Just the way these people are acting around us. We're new here. They don't know us. And they don't trust us! But aren't people normally happy to get newcomers coming into their town?"

I pause for a moment, thinking about that. I've never been anywhere this far from Ravenwood before. But back home we always welcomed travellers with open arms. Found them jobs that needed filling and helped them make a shelter. David might be right. Why should that be different here? But even if there is something wrong here, I'm not sure what we can do about it.

"Calsiphir said that they are meeting up for supper and we're aloud to come." David says interrupting my train of thought. "Do you think we should go?" he asks.

"Don't know. I mean if you think that we can actually help these people, and I'm not so sure we can, you could try to get them to pull their heads together but I'm not sure what else we can really do here."

"Yea I suppose. We could at least try though couldn't we? Because we don't even know what's going on! We could at least go to find out what's happening," David says. "Plus I'm hungry."

We arrive at the hotel and Dad takes off his backpack and takes out a big pile of notes and books four rooms, and we all go upstairs to finally turn in to get some proper sleep. I watch Estella follow her family into one of the rooms and her father's friends make their way into another. Just as I follow David and my Dad into our room and I just see the twins slink into the last, smallest room like shadows and I close the door behind me silently.

Dad dumps his bag on one of the beds and walks to the centre of the room and he starts chanting some kind of magic ritual.

"Umm, what are you doing?" I ask as David plonks himself onto the first bed he comes to face first, not taking much notice of my Dad.

"Creating a window. I need to get back to Kernel and Bec. There is still some unfinished business," Dad says to him then puts his finger to his lips, indicating that he wants silence.

"Kernel and Bec? They your buddies you work with?" David asks, turning onto his back.

"Kind of," he murmurs.

"So what are we supposed to do?" I ask. "Stay and live here until the hunters turn up and kill us all?"

"I never said I was going alone James."

"I can come with you?"

"Yea! Man I would be the worse father of the year if I left you here when there are still hunters on your ass!" dad says grinning. "But for now I need silence. I need to concentrate to get this window open."

"David said we got invited to supper. I'm pretty sure he wants to stay and eat all the food."

"I do want to eat all the food," David adds but Dad ignores him.
