Not so long after the technological peak of human and mechanical society in the early twenty-first century, VirusWare blooms like a weed. Everywhere, wars are using bacteria and single-celled organisms to fight. Though still genetically mutated in a lab, the diseases carry metal parts, their very nucleus laden with wiring.
Once enacted, the bacteria spread by air and water, infecting every possible resource it could, unable to be contained. For a while, it seemed it could not be stopped, until a three-year-old girl named Cecilia was proven to be immune. Government men stormed her cottage, where she lay crying among the deceased bodies of her family, their flesh spread open to the world as a side-effect of the disease. She was carted away and reportedly ripped apart in search for a cure in her tiny body. Everyone else who survived learned not to speak up.
As the bacteria sunk in the soil, a new bacteria was released, along with earthquakes breaking the scales and leaving hundreds of thousands dead by brain trauma. The new bacteria was a blessing disguised in a curse as it too touched every able body that breathed. Those whose genetic build was incompatible to that of the newfound virus, nicknamed Harbinger due to its mixed omens, dropped dead and were then ravaged by VirusWare, and once the plague gripped onto a body, now having infected the four corners of the globe, it literally ate away at the body until there was nothing left. But if one’s genetic compatibility pleased Harbinger, it was infused with their bloodstream and they too were rendered immune to the VirusWare.
Once the viruses had no more bodies left to infect, the Harbinger was vanquished by the VirusWare, and the VirusWare vanquished by its reliance on the mechanical, its parts failing it, the heavily wired nucleus dying, leaving behind bodies of an unknown total. The total would never be known as the virus which died due to its own super-charged abilities did in fact, eat away all of the bones from most of its victims.
Gangs broke out as people tried to eke out a meager existence on what was left, fighting over territory and successfully rebuilding most of society fairly quickly as they became centers for food and shelter of their subjects. Places of entertainment were set up once more as bars, clubs and demonstrations started appearing. Schools and farms were erected off to the side of the heart of the territory, for protection from the cross fire of the outlying territories and the fights that broke out in the heart of the territory. In the center and the outside were the darkest. The center held the gang leader and all those important to the survival of the gang, the dangerous ones. The outside ring held a plethora of crime and betrayal as it was easily influenced by the rival gangs, which left the middle ring for the families and well-disguised moles to live and act. Electricity was sent out to those wealthy enough to afford it, but as nothing had a monetary value it was bought instead by the goods you could make. Those with a knack for weaponry were almost immediately elevated in society. It was a dystopia compared to the age of last, but a utopia compared to those who were separated from civilization entirely.
Inside the center of the gangs lay a hierarchy only comparable to that of medieval time, a true combination of death and power.
