2068. The perfect year to be alive! That must be what you're thinking. But let me tell you something, it is the worst possible year to be alive. Let's start from the beginning.
It was a cool December night. Being a freshman, I didn't get invited to many parties, obviously. So when I got the chance to attend Heathers party, like the most popular girl at my school, I took the chance immediately. I didn't know of the risks that would come with it, but I'll get to that later.
I threw on some nice pants, and a plain brown t-shirt, followed with a nice black jacket and some clean running shoes. I tapped the implant on my wrist, a device implanted into us at birth which determines our identity, who we are, who are parents are, etc. Oh, it is also used for calling. It's voice controlled and doesn't have many features unless you pair it with the lights or water in your household. But it does have the ability to semi-decently control your blood pressure.
"Call Liam."
A short moment later my friend picked up.
"Hey Gabe! Almost ready, slow poke?" I heard my friend speak from the other end of the device, a soft giggle like sound escaped my lips as I rolled my eyes."Of course I am," I quipped playfully, hanging up and jogging down to the door.
"Mum?! I'm heading out now!!" I called out loudly through the large house, hearing my voice echo.
A few moments later I heard her soft footsteps come down the hallway. She must have been working on a new project, shown by the bags under her eyes. But nonetheless, she wore a soft and gentle smile as she approached me. Me and my mother have always been closer than most. Both of us open and comfortable with each other.
"Alright sweetie, have fun tonight. But I expect you to be home by 12:00. And I mean sober, young man," she spoke with narrowed eyes, but the gentle smile stayed on her face. I gave a mock salute and wink, followed by a "Yes ma'am!" My sweet mother rolled her eyes playfully, leaning forward to plant a kiss on my cheek. I faked a gag, pushing her away like a normal teenager would. Oh how much I wish I let her just embrace me.
"By mum~" I called in a sing-song voice, opening the door and bouncing out, hearing it automatically shut behind me. As expected, Liam was waiting outside my house, leaning against the side of his car. His arms were crossed and he rolled his eyes at me, but there was an obvious playful glimmer shimmering in those pale blue eyes.
I stuck my tongue out at him and then hopped in the passenger seat of his car. He followed soon after, getting in the drivers seat. Me and Liam have been best friends since grade school, let alone him being two years older than me. We just click, and have since we were young.
"Come on man, we have to get there soon before all the jocks show up," he clicked his tongue in mock annoyance, starting up the car before pulling out of the driveway. Well, technically the car pulled itself out of the driveway, considering it was a newer model, so it drove itself. In my opinion, it was totally sketchy. But, right now, that is the least of my worries.
We blasted music the entire way there, practically screaming the lyrics then cracking up when our voices cracked terribly. About 30 minutes later, we finally arrived. Long drive, but come on, no one in there right mind would ever miss one of Heather Piersons big parties. Unless you want to be a social outcast for like, ever.
Anyway, once we got there, we punched in the code to get into her gated house. We also both had to scan our implants, a way for Heather to make sure that no one that wasn't invited figured out a way to be let in the party. She was very serious about only letting those she declared 'cool' into her parties. We both hopped out of the car, checking ourselves out for a moment then laughing and finally making our way in.
You can easily tell this is her house because of the blasting music, and lights pulsing behind tinted windows. Plus the projection in front of her house the literally says 'part central'. I stuck close by friends side while walking in, not many freshman, if any at all, would be at this party. I was only allowed in because of all the ties I have with upperclassmen, such as Liam.
"Let's go get some punch" Liam shouted over the blasting music, shoving through the people dancing and drinking in Heathers gigantic living room. I stuck close behind him.
A good, and bad, thing about being friends with Liam, is how tall he is. He stands at a whopping 6'2. While I on the other hand, barely reach 5'3. It's sad really, but comes in handy at parties like these, so I cant exactly complain.
We successfully make it to the kitchen, where the punch, aka alcoholic beverages, can be found. Theres varieties of vodka, beer, wine, etc. Basically any alcohol you can name, Heather Piersons has it. But personally I wasn't much of a drinker, so I went for the actually punch, that did not have alcohol in it. And boy am I glad. That simple decision to listen to my mother could have easily saved my life that night.
"Wanna head outside? I heard they have a pool!" Liam shouted above the music, but even then his voice was slightly difficult to make out. I didn't even bother trying to be heard over this music, so I simply nodded and followed him out.
