"You can't be serious, Lyra. God, you are not wearing that to school," my mum says as I walk around the corner from the hall into the kitchen. Her nose is turned up at the shirt that costed me a fair amount of my hard earned chore money.
"I thought you were supp-"
"I thought you were supposed to be my mum and support me with every choice I make," she says in a girly tone, mocking me and putting her hand on her chest where her heard would be. "Genetically, I am."
I sighed and stared down at my days choice of clothes and smoothed my skirt down over my thighs. Today's shirt made a statement. It said 'F_ _K YOU! Would you like to buy a vowel?' in a Wheel of Fortune style. I knew it wasn't acceptable but I was just going to throw a plaid shirt over it when I got through the school gates. I turned and made my way out of the kitchen to go to my room to change into a different shirt, as it's relatively warm and I sure as hell do not want to smell bad on my first day from making the mistake of putting on too many layers.
"You love me though!" I called out to my mum as I walked down the hall to my bedroom; right at the very end. I made my way over to my chest of drawers and opened the second drawer down. After rifling through some pants and more shirts, I pulled out a plain black shirt to match my black skirt, tights, and shoes... Yeah. I was definitely making a statement.Today, February the second, 2015, marks the annual event of the funeral for my freedom and happiness. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see the people I love, like my good friends Sienna and Idril. Sienna is quite a confident and sporty person. In comparison to me, she makes me look like a total slob, except I am actually a total slob. She's tall, slim, tan, you get the picture. She can also be very self conscious at times, which annoys me a tad because she is literally the definition of perfect. Idril is one of my closest and best friends. She has very pale skin and Elvish-like ears, which made me laugh the first time I ever met her in Year 8. Idril is the name of an Elf in The Lord of the Rings, and I think the name suits her very well. It also means sparkling brilliance, which makes it suit her even more due to the fact that she is brainy as hell and always happy. The people I hate, though, will not get a warm welcome from me this year. Hate is a strong word and I tend to throw the term around loosely, but to be fair my school is full to the brim of girls who sleep around and the male equivalent of girls who sleep around. I find it sad that society only cares about how pretty you are or how many people you sleep with. On both of those scales, I'm about a negative seventy-five.
As my bus drove along the long gravel road, my head bumped repetitively against the dirty window giving me a huge headache. I've hardly even heard the bullshit everyone talks today and I already have a headache. I turned my head to find the zip to the front pocket of my bag when I noticed a new boy sitting in the seat in the opposite row to mine. He was looking out the window at the gloomy weather and little scenery there is to see in our unappealing town; Rockbourne. His hair was dyed a pale green and he had an earring in one ear. He was wearing a black shirt with the sleeves cut off and black skinny jeans. I grimaced at how hot he must be in those and returned to my original intention of getting some pain killers and water. After I downed those, I tried to rest up my eyes a bit before we pulled up to our schools bus drop off point. Dukescrest College isn't as fancy as it sounds, the name is like an overstatement. With boarded up windows and unfinished classrooms, bad paint jobs on most of the blocks and no Wi-Fi, I can safely say that my school is in fact total shit.

I spend most of my free time in the morning looking for Sienna and Idril so that we can all go together as a group and pick up our timetables from the student office.
"I'm nervous. What if we don't get any classes together? What if we won't see each other at all this year!" Sienna practically whines, receiving a loud and lengthened sigh from me in response.
"I think that's statistically unlikely as there are only going to be at the most three year twelve classes this year. There aren't as many of us as there were last year- wait, why are you both looking at me like that?" Idril questions, and me and Sienna start laughing at Idril's smart comment with Idril joining in. I snake my arm around Idril's waist like I always have done for years and gave her a reassuring squeeze, as I can almost feel how tense she is because she's scared of being alone in class again like last year.
"My name is Lyra McCullough, I'm here to pick up my timetable," I say as I get up to the student office window after waiting in line for a few minutes. It reminds me of old ticket booths with the little holes in the window so the people can hear each other speak, exactly like that.
"Year?"
"Huh?"
"What year are you in?"
"Elev-" I shake my head remembering that I've gone up a year, like when someone asks your age a few weeks after your birthday and you accidentally say your previous age. "Twelve, sorry. Still getting used to the fact I'm getting even more closer to my inevitable death." I mumble the last part of course, as I don't want to immediately be signed up for counselling on the first day of school because of my negative outlook on life.We all examine our timetables, and we're all excited for the year ahead of us as most of our classes are together. "This is going to be great!" Idril and Sienna practically squeal in unison. The way they overreact to something, although I know they'll grow tired of what they're overreacting to in the future, makes me happy. My friends make me very happy.
A/N! I know you probably hate authors notes and think they aren't worth reading but I just want to say thanks for reading and if you like it so far please give me feedback. I will be uploading whenever I have time and will have ready made chapters if I'm busy with school. I'll probably upload on a weekly basis as these only take about an hour to write. I want to get better at this and finish something I've started which I never do so please give me feedback and I'll love your forever. By the way if you're expecting Calum, Ashton, and/or Luke to come into the story, they may not because I find it a bit annoying when I'm reading fanfiction and the people they're associated with just randomly pop up and kind of steal the limelight. Sorry but they may, they may not, it all depends on where this goes. :)
