Chapter 4

Two hours later, I am sitting in front of a one-story ranch style home with rose bushes in the front yard. Its 11:30 pm. Do I or don't I go knock on the door. I need to explain to Christine why I need the contracts. I need to tell her about Leah. I only spent an hour with this woman. She has me all twisted around. There is a light on inside the house. I decide to knock on the door. Before I lost my nerve, I open the car door.

It's almost midnight. I have been trying to fall asleep. I have tried yoga and meditating. Neither one worked so now I am in a warm bath with a glass of red wine. I can't seem to stop thinking about Paul since I left him. What makes someone need a contract so detailed? Is he that controlling he has to have every detail of his and his spouse's life is written in a contract? Well, I will never know. That's what I get for letting my temper get the best of me. I left without giving him a chance to explain or saying goodbye. The guy is a controlling prick. Then why can't I stop thinking of the honey eyed man? Probably because I have so much in common with him. Everything thing was going to so well. If he would have just kept those forms to himself. The evening would have been perfect. I closed my eyes and started daydreaming about those honey-colored eyes. I wonder what his kisses would be like. Then the doorbell rang. That just ruined my bath and my daydream. I put on a bathrobe and went to answer the door.

When I opened the door honey color eyes met mine. "Hello, I needed to explain why I wanted to use the contracts to you but didn't get a chance." I am fidgeting with my robe to make sure it is closed. "You do know its midnight right?" Paul looks at me earnestly "Yes, but I couldn't stop thinking about what you said about trusting you. So here I am, going to trust you with why I started using contracts." I took a deep breath. "You smell of whiskey?" Paul looks nervous for a moment "Oh that, I had a small celebratory drink with my best friend who just found out he will be having a baby in November." That must have been who called during our dinner. Can't blame him for calling freaking out over finding out so late into the pregnancy. "Would you like to come in?" Paul's looks relieved when I open the door wider to let him in. "Yes, please." I showed him to my living room. I am self-conscious of the fact I am naked under my robe and there is a man in my home. It's been three years since I have had a man in my home. What was he thinking coming here in the middle of the night? Paul sat on the couch. I sat in the chair across from him. Pulling a throw blanket over me.

"What did you want to tell me," Paul closed eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. "When I was just starting my business. I was dating a woman named Leah. We were high school sweethearts. We lived in a small apartment. She wanted bigger and better in life and I wasn't getting there quick enough for her. My company is all about keeping secrets and helping people with business issues." I put my hand up to stop him and got up and went to the kitchen to grab two wine glasses and the open bottle of wine. "Before we continue would you like a glass of wine with me?" "Yes please." Paul stood up and took the glasses and wine from me and poured each of us a glass. His shirt top button was undone. I could see his nicely tanned chest and he smelled as good as he looked. I stared at his lip wondering what his kiss be like. I blushed at my thoughts. Paul handed me my glass, and I retreated to my chair to cover up again. "Leah got an offer she couldn't refuse. Leah wanted to be a writer. A rival company made an offer to pay her. If she would write an article about the companies I was helping and all my secrets. At this time I had five contract with big name business that had some serious media worthy stuff going on. Leah copied all my data I had and wrote the article and was on the verge of publishing it. I got an email from a friend in the paper giving me a heads up. I had no idea she betrayed me. The last part of our relationship she told me she was writing a piece about a children's book author. I trusted her. I ended up paying Leah more the then the rival company to destroy the article not to post anything in the newspaper about me or my company ever." I took a sip of wine. As Paul continued. "After that for my company safety. I required confidential agreement contracts. Over the years I have revised the contracts and added too. Because of people slipping through the crack and divulging information they shouldn't. Therefore I require the contract with such detail. This time though I got a little contract crazy. It's nothing against you personally. Just I tried trusting people before and got burned."
