Chapter 3
"I told you, I will be there with in an hour. Let me finish what I am in the middle of. I got to go the waiter just came in with the check." I look over the bill and noticed they took fifty dollars off the bill. The waiter was still in the area clearing plates off the table. "Why is there fifty taken off the bill?" The young waiter flinch. "Because the women paid for part of the meal and left the restaurant." The waiter then left. I got up and walk over to where Duane is now sitting with my brother. The other women had already left for the evening. "Duane, I need Christine file."
My brother Patrick looks up at me. "Why, didn't she give you her number and sign all your forms like a good girl?" I scoff at my brother. "No, she paid for her meal and left after I gave her the forms. Also, she isn't a girl. She is a woman. She is older than you are." Patrick looked shocked for a brief moment. "Well, that is a change you always pick young girls to court around on your arm for your events. That do everything you say." Patrick gives me a big snarky smile. "This Woman isn't like she tells you exactly what is on her mind and how she feels. She told me how she is to be courted. She yelled at me if I make her sign a contract. Then I don't trust her and there was no point in talking. Before I could respond to her. I got a call on the emergency phone. She went to the bathroom and didn't come back." Patrick looked shocked. "Sounds like you found a keeper to me. I can't believe she got away with yelling at you in public." "She wasn't that loud about it. Just firm in what she believes in. She intrigues me and I want her file so I can go talk to her."
Patrick takes the stack of folders and sorts through them. "Why don't you wait until tomorrow and call her to apologize and try dating her without a contract." I see Christine folder and snatch it before he can keep it from me. I open the folder to see her picture but there wasn't one. Also, the background check wasn't complete. "Duane, Why isn't there a picture of her like all the other women? Where is the rest of her background check?" Duane ducked his head. "Because she was a fill in. The original woman who was supposed to come backed out. Christine was a last-minute fill in. Jacob in our IT department recommended her. She fills all your criteria. She is successful and beautiful. Only thing she didn't match was the age, but she is mature and independent." But I found the address I memorized it and wrote her phone number.
As I continued through the folder I stopped at the compensation for travel. I can't believe she wrote I don't need your money. I looked up at Duane. "You accepted this signature." Duane smile at me. "Yes, I did. I like her defiance. I also didn't think you would pick her. So it would not be a problem." I stared at him for a moment. I really want to talk to this woman again. "Please get the rest of her background done and as much information as you can on her, please. Then send the file to my house. I will call her tomorrow and apologize. I think I will try this her way. If she does what Leah did before? There will be more than just a payoff the press and her to stay quiet." Patrick sighed. "That won't happen again. Just be careful what you say until you know you can trust her." I patted Patrick on the shoulder. "That's good advice. I am going home to bed. Talk to you tomorrow."
Once I was in my car. I looked up Christine address on GPS. It was right on the outskirts of Des Moines. It would take me 30 minutes to get there. I went to pull out when my phone went off again. It was a text asking if I was still coming. Looks like Christine will have to wait.
I arrived at the office of Adam Heemen. A childhood friend of mine. "What is so important that you want me here right this minute?" Adam was sitting at his desk staring but unseeing at the papers in front of him. I sat down in a chair in front of him and put my feet up on his desk. Adam looked up at me and slides the papers over to me. I read over them and slid them back across. "Well, that is unforeseen. But not an emergency. How would you like me to help?" "Make it go away of course." "I can help you with the jury summons, but there is nothing I can do about the baby. DNA doesn't lie."
"It was a one-night stand. She was beautiful. I didn't expect to ever see her again." "According to the note she wants nothing from you. Just wants you to know she is having a baby in end of November. That is in two months. If you want, you can ignore them. Just keep living like you are now." That comment got the reaction I wanted. "I cannot and will not ignore my child." I smile brightly at him. "Well, my friend it looks like you will have to speak with the mother and hope she lets you be in the baby's life. If you are lucky, maybe you can start a relationship with her, or send her child support every month." Adam hangs his head in defeat. "I don't know her. How can I get her to trust me with my reputation as a playboy?" I got up and walked over to my friend and knocked him in the head. "You will make a great dad. You were awesome with your nephews when they were growing up. You practically helped raise them. They were always at your house on Friday nights for sleep overs. Getting her to like you is a whole other topic." I went over to his liquor cabinet and pour two glasses of whiskey. "You are right I am great with kids. The least I can do is be a part of the child's life. I am 37 years old. I was not expecting to be a father ever." I smile. "Let toast to unexpected surprises."
