Chapter 2

I had already started work and was on my second cup of coffee when Liddy crept into the office. She was moving gingerly and wearing sunglasses. “Good night last night?” I shouted across the room.

She jumped and swore at me as she took off her coat.

“It’s your own fault.”

Liddy sat down and we carries on working until our break at 11am. We ran over the street in the rain to Starbucks and sat down with a muffin.

“So, was the party actually fun last night? I can’t remember.”

I snorted. “Yeah, people seemed to enjoy it…”

She nodded slowly, “…wait, you… You danced with that Aaron guy!”

I nodded silently.

“Please tell me you didn’t give him the classic Anais one night stand. He’s too nice!”

“I didn’t sleep with him!”

“Thank God, he’s so sweet… So you just danced?”

“Yeah,” I decided not to give the details of what really happened. She had been with the same guy since she was fifteen and didn’t exactly approve of my attitude towards men. Also if I gave all the details she would find out I gave him my number which would get her excited. She always wanted me to get a boyfriend so we could double date. Ugh. The thought made me gag.

We went back over the road with takeaway Starbucks to last us until lunch. When I got settled back at my desk I noticed a message on my phone.

HAD FUN LAST NIGHT. FANCY MEETING UP AGAIN? AARON   X

I didn’t delete the text but I didn’t reply. I left it and got back to work. I had to write up two reports before taking a couple to view an apartment in South London.

I had to stop myself retching from the couple’s sappiness. They had pet names for each other and after every sentence they would kiss each other or worse, nuzzle their noses together. I left them talking about baby names and filled in some paperwork. When I got back to the office, Craig, our boss called for a meeting.

“As you know the recession has hit the property market hard. House prices have been see sawing while people are more reluctant than ever to buy. We have been fighting here, but today unfortunately we received the news that we can’t continue to work on the scale that we are. This means that there are going to be job cuts before the end of the month. As of yet we don’t know how many.”

Everyone around the room started muttering and Liddy looked like she was going to hyperventilate. I rolled my eyes and went to get back to work. As everyone was moving out Craig pulled me back.

“Anais, a moment please.”

He waited until everyone had left before sitting down behind his desk. He indicated for me to sit down but I continued standing.

“As I said Anais, we do know there are going to be cuts and while nothing is set in stone, your name was mentioned.”

I looked out towards the window and then back. “Why are you telling me this?”

“I’m sorry?”

“You say there were several names. Why are you telling me? If the decision is above me and you then what’s the point of telling me. I can’t change things.”

He looked uncomfortable and I knew I had won. I always win.

“May I leave? Or is there more useless information which you want to tell me?”

“You can go.”

As I walked out of the door he said, “Maybe Anais,  it’s that attitude that is holding you back.”

I shook my head and left the office. It was 4.45 and I had finished my important work so I decided to just leave. I stamped my foot slightly. God I was so angry!

I felt the need to do something reckless. Let off some steam.

SHIT DAY. COME ROUND ABOUT 9?

I sent him my address and within minutes he text back and confirmed.

This again was against my rules. Never text a guy (Let them text you) Never meet up again (That leads to a relationship. Never invite them round (They can find you again). Hell, I could have a whole book of rules.

Liddy caught up with me, “Heey, who you texting?”

I raised my eyebrow. “Seriously?”

“Sorry. Mrs, Private.”

I continued walking and Liddy was skipping every few steps to keep up with me.

“So, I was on the phone at lunch and word on the street is that Aaron really liked you.”

I scoffed.

“That’s what I thought.” Liddy said, “I mean seriously, how can anyone get close enough to you to decide they like you.” She said it jokingly but it was still harsh. I turned abruptly.

“Thanks.”  I turned and walked in the opposite directon. Liddy being so untactful just ruined an already rubbish day.

When I got in I opened a bottle of beer and put some tracksuit on. Out of principle I wasn’t going to do anything special for tonight. I was not going to dress up and I was not going to cook.

At 9.10 the doorbell rang. I hopped up surprised. I had almost forgotten he was coming round.

As I opened the door I was taken aback slightly. I had almost forgotten how attractive he was.

“Hey” He said.

“Hey.” And I kissed him.

I was worried he was going to pull away as I pushed him onto the bed but as I pulled off my hoody he smiled and undid my bra.

My thoughts about his torso were correct and when I pulled off his shirt I was greeted by a gorgeous toned stomach. I kissed down his stomach and he shivered when I reached his belt buckle.

“What was wrong with your day?”

I hadn’t asked him here for a conversation so I kissed him again, inviting his tongue in my mouth as he pulled my tracksuit down. He knew what he was doing, pinching and squeezing all the right places.

He pushed me on my back so he was on top, but I pushed forward again.

“You don’t always have to be in control,” He whispered against my neck. The feel of his breath on my skin made me shudder slightly.

I recovered quickly though, “Yes I do,” and so I rolled him over so I was top. He didn’t fight me this time.
