The very first book we would like to recommend to you all, is called Beginnings, and is part of a series titled The Skylar Experiment, written by nonametk. This book has been recommended to us by one of Nonametk's readers.
The author describes this book as "action-packed with a sprinkle of mystery wrapped in a science-fiction teen drama", and that could not be more accurate. It's got everything you expect (and love) from an action-mystery-scifi-teen drama story. And more!
Riley is born with the odds against her. Although her adoptive parents love her, she is isolated from her true nature and her peers. A change of plans causes her to be relocated to Oakwood, a small town full of others like her. She slowly discovers truths about herself she could never fathom... Excited to read yet? So were we.
Here's why we love this book. Beginnings has a beautiful style that's very clear and comfortable to read. The perfect descriptions beautifully paint the scenes in your head. Right from the start, the characters sound and feel real, thanks to convincing dialogue and great visuals.
There's a couple of things the author has done brilliantly in this book. One of those is tone of voice. The prologue and the first chapter are written from the (third person) point of view of a researcher, while in chapter two we switch to first person view of Riley. With this switch, the tone of voice changes, too. From a fairly professional style of writing, fitting for the researcher, we move to a more teenager-like tone of voice, which fits perfectly with seventeen year old Riley. This is marvellously done; just from reading the first sentence, you can tell whose point of view we're in, even if there hasn't been any mention of the characters yet.
Another highlight is that the author has very cleverly managed to weave in a ton of information and character background, without it feeling like an info dump. The chapters aren't long, and yet it only took the prologue to have me intrigued, and only another chapter or two to have me completely entranced by the situation and the world these characters live in. And the background just made them come to life even more than the dialogue and descriptions had already done.
And lastly, this book stands out simply because of the creativity of the plot. This is something we don't want to dive into too much at this point, because we don't want to spoil anything for you.
In short: Beginnings is a brilliant book, and well-deserving of out very first Spotlight! Congratulations nonametk.
