A/N: So I put this story as a draft for a while, because I was at a loss of where to take it. I've been getting back into rewatching Inuyasha and missed it, and managed to write this out. It's still kind of difficult for me to write, mixed with my general ADD and health issues, but I'm trying to write it more. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Days passed with little incident. Every now and then, we'd come across a low-level demon, and it was good training for me to figure out all these demon powers. It felt surprisingly natural, just untrained and therefore rough, but I felt like I was adjusting well enough. Feudal Japan was gorgeous, and since unlocking my abilities, I had more energy; I could run faster and further, climb up trees, and fight for long periods of time without getting winded. It was a nice feeling.
"You have to learn to use your senses," Inuyasha said as we trained in the area we were stopped at for the night. The sun was just starting to set, but the others grew tired. Before I could really comprehend, his nails were at my throat, and I felt the bark of a tree against my back. He knew how to make the threat real enough, without putting me in true danger, which surprised even the others. "Hear small movements, feel the change in the wind in the energy, use all this new stuff, and anticipate an enemies movements. Otherwise, if we come across anything more than idiotic demons that don't know their head from their asses, you're going to end up killed." He stepped back so we could get back into stance.
"It's remarkable... she should have an upper hand on him, being a full demon, yet she's struggling to keep up," I heard Miroku whisper to our companions that were sitting off to the side.
I tried not to let it distract me, following what Inuyasha said, listening and feeling, trying to anticipate. I could see him approaching me this time, blurred like I was seeing things in slow motion. It gave me just enough time to dodge his claws and fists, but it was giving me no time to turn from defence to offence. Sure, it may save my life in a battle, but not be enough to win one.
"Dodging isn't enough! You have to fight back," he said, echoing my thoughts, and struck again. But there was still no time. In trying to focus and find an opening, I was feeling tired faster and got sloppy. It wasn't long before I was tossed to the other side of the clearing we were in, managing to skid to a stop before I hit another tree.
"Dammit!" I yelled, resting my hands on my knees, panting heavily.
"Focus!" Inuyasha shouted, cracking his knuckles, barely seeming fazed.
"I am focusing! I didn't grow up with this shit," I snapped at him, reminding him of that important fact. I ran my fingers through my hair, tossing it up into a messy bun to keep it out of my way.
"Maybe you guys should take a break," Kagome suggested. She was just as weirded out about these recent developments as I was. It seemed like it was such chance that I became friends with a girl who could bring me back to my proper time and only do it by accident, but I assumed there was some form of fate at play.
The half-demon looked at me, and I shook my head. "Again," I said, pushing myself to stand up straight. "Unless you're getting tired," I taunted, knowing Inuyasha well enough by now to tell that he didn't back down from challenges.
He scoffed. "I'm just fine, just don't keel over and die on us, yeah?" he asked, getting back into a fighting position, smirk on his lips.
"I don't die that easily," I assured him, giving him a nod to show I was ready. It was similar to the last time, him on offence, and me stuck on defence. I had a feeling even if we started with me attacking first, he'd just flip it back around and we'd be back to where we were now. Any attempt to turn the table failed, striking out and landing none of the hits, and having to move at the last second to avoid his counterattack. It continued for what seemed like forever, until one of his attacks finally landed, sending me back once more. "Fuck!" I shouted, annoyed.
