Melanie was born and raised in a small town in Georgia. She has always been close with her family, and loved the little town she grew up in. She started dating a boy named Sebastian when she was sixteen, and when she was twenty-one, he proposed to her. Then, a couple months later, she found out she was pregnant; and gave birth to a little girl named Macey. However, Sebastian and Melanie cut things off when she was twenty-three, but they still stayed in touch and made sure to spend a lot of time with Macey together. Meanwhile, Melanie worked as an elementary school teacher.

When Melanie was twenty-five, the apocalypse began. Sebastian found them immediately, and her, Macey, and Sebastian planned on going to Atlanta, where Melanie's parents had moved to. However, they never made it into the city, since it was bombed and fell to the undead. After that, they found a little group of survivors inside a school, and stayed with them for months. However, one of the survivors in the group came back from a supply run bitten one day, and turned a couple other people in the middle of the night. Chaos erupted, and Sebastian grabbed his ex-fiancé and daughter and ran.

They were on their own for a couple months, until Sebastian became bitten. Melanie had to put him down, and tried to stay strong for her daughter. She never really got a chance to mourn her ex-fiancé's death. Melanie and Macey travelled from town to town, settling down for a couple days and then heading back on the road. But, one day, they were discovered by another group of survivors — led by a man named Rick Grimes. They took the mother and daughter in, and quickly became their family... and it didn't take long for Melanie to begin falling for Rick Grimes.
