Born and raised in Florida, Jo did not grow up with a happy, good life. With an alcoholic, abusive mother and a depressed father, it was hard for the three kids to be happy. Her oldest brother, Harrison, moved out as soon as he turned 18 and ended up becoming a drug dealer — then being thrown in jail by the time he was twenty. Her other older brother, Charlie, actually got accepted to college and had a chance at a good life — but he moved to California to escape his family and cut off all communication with them. Then, Jo moved out and lived in an apartment in Georgia, working as a bartender and followed in her brother's footsteps, getting into the drug dealing business — but unlike him, she didn't get caught. She had many relationships with many different women, never settling down.

When the apocalypse started, she was alone, but she was already used to it. She stayed in her apartment for months, only leaving to go on supply runs. She ran into many people, but never joined up with them, since she felt like she couldn't trust them. Even though she was alone, dealing with Walkers wasn't an issue; Jo's brothers had taught her how to use guns, so she had no problem killing them. She knew how to survive and she was good at it.

Then, a while into the apocalypse, Jo ended up leaving her apartment since she had scavenged every nearby store and house for food. A couple weeks after, she came across one apartment building, and was looking for supplies there when she found three girls: two sisters named Lilly and Tara, and Lilly's daughter Meghan. They seemed harmless, and Jo had realized that after all this time... she was lonely. After thinking about it, Jo decided to stay with them, and accompanied Tara on supply runs to get food for them. Her and Tara ended up hooking up many times, but she didn't start to develop feelings for her until a couple months later.

Then Phillip Blake found them and ruined everything.
