Five years ago,

My small gannet heart fell for another.

I always stood with her,

Every second of every day.

I'd talk with her and only her,

Every second of every day.

Every time a new flock came in,

I'd turn my lovestruck body to her.

She never seemed to notice...

Never seemed to emote... At all...

But that's why I love her.

I don't want to sound weird,

But somehow, I know deep inside,

She loves me too.

The way we always meet under the sun,

The same time,

Every day of the week.

But this is my goodbye.

I built her a nest,

I groomed her feathers between my beak,

The Island Of Lies.

I sat there with some of my last breaths,

Feeling the breeze brush around us.

Out of the flock of 40,

there is no one else I'd rather be with.

I placed my wing on hers,

She just sat and stared at the setting sun,

'You know... I've never heard your voice...'

Silence.

'Heh... I guess I'll never hear it...'

I laid down next to her and held her tight.

'I'll be waiting... I love you'

No reply.

My wing slipped down hers, breaking off one of her feathers...

Concrete.

Our love was manufactured.

Her love was artificial.

At least I know mine was real...

The Island Of Lies...

The Island Of 40 Fakes...

The Island Of The Heart Broken Bird...

Mana Island....

Based on the story of the world's loneliest bird.

-Author's Note-

I know the story of this animal has been long forgotten for anyone outside of new zealand, but I have constantly been reading up things on strange animal lives:

- 52Blue the Whale with the High Pitched Song (2016)

- Nigel 'No Mates' the Gannet (2018)

- Mali the Elephant (2015)

ETC. ETC.

I was going to write a poem on 52B but I decided to write one on the loneliest Gannet as their story seems to be the most depressing. Falling in love with a statue, thinking they were real.
