I ran my fingers through my hair once more. I’ve got to look good tonight.
I stared at the reflection in the mirror. I wore a white, long sleeved, collared shirt paired with dark blue jeans. It didn’t look ‘formal’ enough to me, so I picked up the sleek, black tie that was rested on the mahogany chair. Fastening it, I felt as if I was giving too much effort now.
“Too obvious,” I muttered to myself subconsciously. Exasperated, I loosened the tie and slumped down onto my bedside, staring at my reflection.
“Why am I worrying anyways?”
Right now, I just didn’t feel… enough. I thought of all my friends who were going to be at the party. All the guys… and the girls…
It’s been so long since I had a day with Katherine to myself.
It’s not like I’m attracted to her or anything, I probably just missed her. That’s reasonable isn’t it …for a guy to miss his best friend? We chat on social media and Skype with each other almost every day, but it’ll be nice to have her physically there with me.
“And I’m finally going to see her again tonight,” I tried to reassure myself, but the bitter feeling in my core just wouldn’t subside.
All of a sudden, my room door swung open.
“Evannn, mahh boy! Come here, you!” Before I could defend myself, Matt already had his arm around me.
“Oh, no…” He started rubbing his fist into my brain.
“Get off! Matt get off! Noo!! Not my hairrrr!!” I pleaded as I broke free from him. Matt lay on the bed, laughing his head off. I could only stare at my ruined hair… and my crumpled shirt. Naturally, I let out a whimper of hopelessness and despair.
Matt is tall and blonde. Moreover, he’s in the football team, so it’s no surprise he’s very built and muscular. In fact, every guy is taller and bigger than I am. I’m practically only 5’ 7”, but I do try to keep my height out of discussions.
“Owwww!” I was awakened from my thoughts when Matt slapped me right on the back.
“Yo, Nate and Chad are waiting for us downstairs. I know you’re the birthday man, – but heck, I need some booze, ‘A’-sap.”
“Alright! Alright! Just let me fix my hair. You ruined it. You’re such a ruin-er.” As I attempted to put the broken pieces back together, Matt ruffled my hair playfully before running off. That d*ckhead.

‘IIV’ was like any other typical club – noisy, crowded and polluted with the pungent smells of smoke and alcohol. The guys played it cool when meeting up with the girls by the entrance, but once they’ve been let in those double doors – all medieval nature broke loose. They were scattered to the dance floor in front of the deejay, and obviously to the bar located at the heart of the venue.
There were more girls than I thought I had invited – I didn’t know the majority of them personally, although I recognized some of them from school. They came up to me shyly, wishing me ‘happy birthday’ and showering me with hugs. They carried handmade cards, and silver and blue balloons meant for me. Some even went to the extent of buying and wrapping gifts into extravagant cube and cuboidal boxes, equipped with ribbons and bows.
I thanked them graciously of course. As the saying goes, “when in doubt, just smile.” Silly girls. If only they knew I had no interest in the female gender.
Then there were the girls I was already familiar with, such as Rebekkah Argan. We go way back, and it’s only because she’s Katherine’s best friend that I was acquainted with her.
