They have been an "unofficial" couple for the longest time. They were behaving exactly like one - including living together for AGES but they simply never gotten to the "Are you gonna be my partner?" conversation.
So they are complete idiots in love, not realizing that:
A) They are in love with the other person
B) The other person is in love with them
C) That they are a couple after all
They probably just got asked if they are a couple some day, looked at each other and went "Well... Are we?".
The person asking probably had a little crisis as well afterwards.
