Chapter One
Zara Ellis
“Come on, Zara!” came my best friend voice from outside the tent. “What are you even doing in there?”
I didn’t reply, looking disappointedly down at the tiny mirror in my hands. Hearing the zip being pulled open, I turned to see Ashley’s perfect face. Why couldn’t I just look like her?
“Hey,” I tried weakly.
Unfortunately, she had none of it. “Hurry up! Ed’s on in a min!”
I sighed. “So?”
“Seriously? I have been waiting to see him for ages!” she said, wide eyed.
When my face stayed uninterested, she tried a different approach. “Please?” she begged, clasping her hands together. “I will love you forever!”
“I thought you already did?” I asked, faking anger before giggling at her worried expression. “Joking!”
She let out a deep breath. “Anyway, come on!”
I sighed, picking myself up from the ground. Ash grabbed my wrist, yanking my forwards and out of the tiny tent, which had become our home for a few days. When she finally let go of my aching arm, I rubbed it, wincing slightly. After examining the red blotch that was rapidly emerging on my wrist, I looked up. I realized we were in front of a huge platform with the words SoundWave – Manchester printed in bold letters.
The only thing that let the whole show down was that the stage was empty.
Eventually, I started getting restless. That Ed guy wasn’t there and I was thirsty. Nudging Ash, I whispered in her ear, “I’m just going to get a bottle of water, do you want-“
She grabbed my arm again, bringing my hopeful departure to an end before it had even started. “You’re not going anywhere.” She said with an air of finality I groaned, opening my mouth to retort. “Seriously, he’ll be on in a moment.”
I huffed. “Okay, but if he’s not on in-“
Before I could finish my sentence, a chorus of screams interrupted me. My head snapped up towards the stage, which was now occupied by a lone figure with amazingly ginger hair. As the constant roar continued, I realized one of the people making all the noise being my best friend. Turning away from my friend in disgust of the obsession, I hoped that this guy was as amazing as Ash claimed.
Ashley was what you could call a crazy fan girl. She pretty much stalked the poor guy. Her bedroom walls were covered with posters of his face, she had all of his music and if she discovered his current whereabouts, she would most likely go there. I, on the other hand, was no big fan. Yeah, he was cute, had a good voice, but I wasn’t really into him. If I saw him walking by on the street, for example, I probably wouldn’t recognise him or if I did I wouldn’t pee my pants about it. I sighed as I thought about what my ‘dedicated’ best friend would say, if she found out.
“Hello Manchester!” came the booming voice from the stage, effectively snapping me out of thoughts.
The audience screamed back, causing me to cover my poor, harassed ears with my hands. Why was I here again? I thought, as the spectators continued to shriek.
“I’m Ed, and I am here to entertain you,” he started into the microphone, ruffling up his hair. “So I have one job for you, okay?”
“Yeah!”
“Your job is too be entertained. You can do that, right?” He smiled, and even I had to admit; he had a cute smile.
I couldn’t help but grin. Looking over at Ash, I figured that, from the star struck look on her face, she was enjoying it. At least she was happy, I thought. She had been though a tough time lately. Her boyfriend had dumped her, just to go out with a complete bitch, and she still had heart ache.
“Okay, so the first song I’ll be playing for you today is Lego House. Enjoy,” Ed said, as he started strumming his guitar.
“I'm gonna pick up the pieces,
And build a Lego house,
If things go wrong we can knock it down…”
He had a beautiful voice, I would give him that. But still I wasn’t fully impressed.
“My three words have two meanings,
There's one thing on my mind,
It's all for you…”
*
“It's too cold outside,
For angels to fly,
For angels to fly,
To fly,
For angels to die...”
I felt the sharp exhale of breath from everyone around me, myself included. It was as if each and every person watching had held their breath as they listened.
“That’s it for now, thank you for coming!” he said, before bowing to the crowd.
A round of crazy applause broke out, causing him to smile widely. Then he turned and within seconds, he was gone, signalling that the show was indeed over.
I recovered quickly, dragging my eyes away from the now empty stage. I seized Ashley’s arm, swiftly guiding her away. She followed without resistance and was surprisingly quiet, before she, finally, burst.
“That was amazing!”
I patted her arm soothingly, hoping she would calm down. She didn’t.
“Oh my God! I have never felt so happy! Ed Sheeran, oh God,” she babbled. “His face, wow. Oh,Zee, did you see his face?”
I nodded as she continued to talk nonsense. Zoning out, I thought back to the show. Yes, he was good, but there were other people-
“Sweet baby Jesus, this is the best day of my entire life!” My best friend was very flustered indeed, a rosy glow in her cheeks. She finished with a content sigh.
I smiled at her, suddenly tired. It had been a long day.
“I love him, Zee!” Ash started again, grabbing my shoulders and shaking me wildly.
Nodding understandingly, I patted her cheek before leading her away. “I know, babe. I know…”
