Chapter Four

 

A few weeks later, I was stuck behind the bar at Starbuck’s yet again. Luckily, my boss had decided that I was good enough to keep, despite my sprained ankle. I was enjoying it though. I had missed the comforting smell of fresh coffee, and the discounts, and-

Two hands slapped over my eyes as a warm body pressed against my back, causing me to squeal. “Lucas!”

A chuckle, accompanied by a rumble against my back, I figured I was right. Reaching up, I pulled his hands away from my eyes, and spun around. However, I had obviously underestimated my disability and fell flat on my face.

Literally, and Lucas didn’t even help me up.

Once I had finally managed to get up, I scowled at the offending boy. He grinned and shrugged, before skipping into the backroom. Sighing, I scanned to the shop. It was a quiet day today, due to the fact that it was seven in the morning on a Saturday.

When I saw nothing of interest, I let out a sigh, before deciding to make myself a cup of coffee. I didn’t really like it that much, but it kept me awake and its bitter taste was a fantastic distraction from a certain ginger haired, blue-eyed boy.

Ed Sheeran.

The boy I hadn’t stopped thinking about since we met hardly a month before.

Why was it so hard to just forget him? Because he was everywhere. I turned on the radio and one of his songs would play. I looked in a magazine, turned on the TV; he was there. I groaned, staring at the stream of coffee disappearing into my cup, trying to clear my head.

“Um, excuse me?”

I spun round, somehow managing to knock the almost full cup of steaming coffee all over me. Shock washed over me and I hissed, the searing pain spreading though my body. Remembering the reason why I had spilled the hot drink in the first place, I looked up into two very familiar blue eyes, my mouth dropping open.

I stared for what felt like ages, captivated by the boy in front of me, before I saw the concerned expression on his face.

“Are you okay?”

I looked up into his eyes, recognition flashing though his own. Remembering to breath I looked down at my wet shirt and the dirty floor. I sighed, this was just my luck.

“Um, yeah, of course,” I said sheepishly, pulling my hot, sticky t-shirt away from my aching skin. I wasn’t, but he couldn’t know that. “I’m fine.”

“Okay…” he replied unsurely, his eyes fixated on the section of throbbing skin poking out from my collar. “Are you sure? That looks painful.”

All I could do was nod, as the pain got stronger. “Sorry, I have to go change. I’ll be back in a minute.”

I turned, before I heard him yell. “Wait!”

Spinning back, I looked into his eyes. It was all too much; the physical pain in my chest, and the dizziness I got from looking at him. “I’m sorry, I’ll be quick, okay?”

He sighed, before nodding in defeat. “Okay.”

I stepped though the backroom door, hoping the ginger haired boy would still be by the counter. Scanning the shop quickly, my heart sunk in my chest.

“He’s gone.”

I whirled around to see Lucas, his arms crossed over his chest. I shot him a confused look.

He shrugged, “That ginger dude, he said left.”

A small ‘oh’ escaped my mouth, as I felt my stomach churn uncomfortably.

I had run into the back room after spilling the coffee, only to bump into Lucas. He had steadied me and got out of me that Ed was at the counter, and had forced me to put ice on my throbbing skin, before going to serve my customer. I had hoped he had stayed, but I obviously was much more interested in him than he was in me.

A crumpled serviette was shoved in front of my face, along with Lucas’ hard voice. “He left you this.”

Blinking, I grabbed the note, my eyes scanning over it quickly.

Sorry had to go. Hope you’re burn was ok.

A warm feeling spread though me, as I read the messy scrawl. I grinned, his own eyes popping into my head.
