Lyra flicked through her Beastiary on the morning of the swimming carnival. There were hundreds of different supernatural entities that it contained, but none that fit what she did yesterday. Ok, Lydia was right she thought to herself, everyone must have just zoned out during the practice. She busied herself for the rest of the morning by fixing the rest of the packs fashion disasters. As Stiles walked out of his bedroom; Lyra zoned in on him using her fashion radar—the only supernatural entity she could wield. Eyeing him up and down, her body tensed in embarrassment.
“Dad!! Why have you got black socks on?!” Lyra practically screamed at her father.
“They were the closest to me…” Stiles responded; shocked, knowing full well what was about to happen. He straightened up tall and backed up slowly towards the door as Lyra stalked up to him.
“Oh no, we’re fixing that” Lyra instructed her dad, taking him by the arm and dragging him back into the room.
Lyra was picking out an outfit for each of her Father’s when James bounded into the room.
“Come on Lyra! The races are about to start!” He said as he raced back out of the room, the sound of the front door slamming after about three seconds. With a sigh, knowing that her Dads would be dressed inappropriately for the rest of the day, she grabbed her things and walked into Laura’s bedroom.
“Hey, could you give me a lift?” she asked her sister.
“Give me just a minute…” Laura pondered, pursing her lips and not looking up from the large dusty spell book she had been given by Deaton after her outburst last year. She could use general magic without spells, flying and levitation, but in most circumstances, she needed to vocalise the written spells from the book. Laura stood up placing the book on a stand, still not taking her eyes of it and chanted an ancient form of Latin that Lyra didn’t understand.
As she spoke, her eyes glowed, along with her necklace. Her mirror shimmered, as tiny ripples made their way across the surface, emitting a strange light. When the ripples stopped, the mirror went back to being a flat surface. Lyra spoke up.
“Uuuuuh…what was that?” She asked, confused.
“A new way of getting around, if it worked” Laura responded casually.
Laura walked up to the full length mirror and poked into it with her finger. Ripples appeared as if the surface was made of liquid, and her finger went straight into the mirror. When she pulled her finger out with a satisfied expression, the mirror instantly went back to being flat.
“Now can you explain to me what just happened?” Lyra asked, still confused.
“Sure, I turned my mirror into a portal that allows one way travel between any reflective surface that the transporting object can fit through.” she told her sister, acting like it was something that happened every day.
“How does it work?” Lyra asked, confusion mixed with awe, coated her question.
“You just think about the place you want to be and step through the mirror. Of course you’ll obviously come out the other side through a mirror at the location.” She responded.
“Let’s use it to get to school!” Lyra said grabbing her things and walking up to the mirror.
“Ok, just remember to concentrate.” Laura instructed Lyra as she turned, stuffing her spell book in her bag and slinging the bag onto her back.
“Laura, have you-” Derek stepped into Laura’s room just in time to see the two girls walking into the mirror. He froze in thought for a moment, and then deciding he didn’t even what to know, he turned and exited out the door.
