"Can't you go any faster?" the Doctor asked energetically from the passenger seat. I raised my eyebrows and once again motioned to the speedometer.
"Doctor, we're already speeding! And I let you control the lights!" I reminded her, crushing her dreams of being a speed demon. She would just have to settle for the lights, because I wasn't going to lose my job over something as silly as speeding.
The Doctor frowned for a moment but cheered right back up when the radio buzzed.
"Officer Khan, we have a code yellow on Holly Street. We need you to cover it," the receiver ordered. The Doctor looked thrilled, because she didn't know what a code yellow meant, but I groaned and slammed my forehead against the steering wheel.
"On it," I replied, raising the walkie talkie to my mouth, less than enthusiastically.
"What's a code yellow? Robbery? Vandalism? Ooh- or a stolen car?" The Doctor asked, echoing my thoughts. I sighed and signaled my directional.
"Nope of the above," I replied, disappointed.
"Parking dispute," I finished. The Doctor's face scrunched up and her upper lip lifted above her teeth. That face made me laugh, every time.
"Still could be fun," she offered optimistically. I knew she got an idea because her eyes and mouth flew open simultaneously.
"Can I wear your cap?" She asked. I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help the smile that crept across my face.
"Are you actually a child?" I responded, teasing her, but handing over my hat anyway. Her eyes crossed as she stared up to her head and pulled on the cap.
"What's wrong with being a kid? Just means I've got more dreams. More hope," she answered, checking her reflection in the rear view mirror. I couldn't argue with her. She smiled wide and there was no way I could deny she looked adorable.
I turned onto Holly Street and knew immediately who had called. There was an older woman with a brown pixie cut standing in the middle of the road. She waved me over as soon as she noticed the fed car headed towards her.
I got out of the vehicle but the Doctor was faster than I was.
"Hello ma'am, what can we help you with?" She asked, rushing up to the woman and stealing my line. The lady pointed to the car behind her, which I noticed was very old and beat up.
"This vehicle here has been parked in front of my house for a month. A month! Without moving or anything! I talked to all the neighbors, and none of them know who it belongs to!" The woman crossed her arms and the Doctor went to examine the red and white van. She tried the doors, which were locked, and pulled out her sonic screwdriver.
"Did you notice when the vehicle arrived?" I asked, pulling out my notepad and pencil. I was directed to write down everything, even if the situation seemed ridiculous.
"No. I woke up one morning, and there it was! Parked right in front of my house," The woman complained. That was certainly one I'd never heard before. Maybe this case was more than I'd originally thought.
"Alright ma'am I'll have a look and take down the license plate number, but for now-" I was cut off by the sound of the Doctor's gasp. I whirled around and saw the Doctor on the ground, a man on top of her. He must have jumped at her from the now open van. She immediately socked him in the nose, which gave him a fright.
Without hesitating, I grabbed my taser and launched it at the man. He writhed and fell off of the Doctor, who scrambled to her feet. I shut off my taser and turned to the woman standing frightened behind me.
"Go inside, ma'am. We'll handle it from here," I ordered. I saw the reluctance to comply flash across her eyes, but she gave in, and headed back to her home.
I turned back to the Doctor, who was kneeling over the unconscious man. He had a tight white T-shirt on paired with black trousers, and his dark hair was hiding his entire face. With a gentle hand, the Doctor pushed his hair back and froze.
"Who is it?" I asked, able to identify the look of recognition that passed across her features. I secretly hoped it wasn't another one of her exes.
A smile passed across her face as she looked up to face me.
"This is Captain Jack Harkness."
*Author* This story has been so fun, exciting, and gratifying to write. Thank you to everyone who has read, enjoyed, and commented to give me that extra confidence boost along the way. I was thinking... How about a sequel?
