Chapter Two
“What the crap?” Astrid demanded. Catherine shuddered, still not used to hearing Astrid’s accent and snappy monologue coming out of her own mouth.
“I don’t know,” she answered mournfully.
“No seriously, what the crap?” Astrid growled.
“I don’t know!” Catherine shot back, flustered.
“Well, I would very much like ta know,” Astrid muttered.
“And you think I don’t?” Catherine snapped. “Look, Ast, I know you’re freaking out, okay? But please, you have to remember that I’m dealing with this too. I mean, look at me! I’m you!”
“I know,” Astrid murmured, growing bright red. “It’s extremely unnerving.”
“Well, I can guarantee you I’m feeling equally creeped out.”
The two girls were walking down the hall together, headed towards the Bridge. Though both had yet to figure out what was going on, they both knew they couldn’t be late to report for their jobs, which always came first. Kirk was expecting them to be punctual and ready as they always were, and they couldn’t disappoint their captain, even in light of emergencies like this one.
“I don’t know anything about computers,” Astrid squeaked, horrified.
“And I don’t know anything about engineering,” Catherine sighed.
“Great,” Astrid said shortly. “Just great. We’re totally screwed.”
“No, we can’t think like that. We just have to act normal until we can meet again and try to figure this out.”
“Normal? How on earth are we supposed ta act normal like this?”
“Good morning, Astreed!”
Catherine felt her heart start to pound even faster as a certain Russian ensign put his arm around her shoulder and planted a light kiss on her cheek. “Sleep well?”
Catherine couldn’t bring herself to speak. She could hardly function enough to walk, let alone respond! She felt herself growing redder by the second, and realized that it was probably more prominent now that she was wearing Astrid’s ridiculously white face.
“Astreed?” Chekov prompted, giving her a concerned look.
Astrid reached over and kicked the back of her shin.
“Morning!” Catherine cried, half in surprise and half in horror, much louder than she meant to. Chekov took on a look of slight apprehension.
“Ees everything okay?” he asked.
“Fine!” Catherine answered, doing her best impersonation of Astrid (which was mediocre, at best). “Just fine, you?”
“I am well,” he answered, raising an eyebrow. “Zyou sound deefrent...”
“Do I? I hadn’t noticed,” she laughed nervously.
“You are acting kind of strenge...are zyou sure zyou are okay?”
“Oh, most definitely! Just...a little tired, is all...if you’ll excuse us, Astrid-” (Another kick from Astrid) “-Catherine! Haha, Catherine and I ‘ave got some work ta do. See ya later, ya?”
“Sh-sure! Um...goodbye, then…?”
“Bye!”
Catherine dragged Astrid up the next hallway, safely away from Chekov.
