Chapter Four

“So,” Bones said shyly, saddling up next to Scotty. “You said you do this all time?”

“Yeah,” Scotty answered. “Ever since I can remember.”

“What’s that like?”

“Well...it’s definitely bloody. Not exactly a dream job. Lots of broken hearts and disturbing matters that you have to soak your hands in. I hate to admit it, but a lot of it stays with me, even when I don’t want it to.”

“I can only imagine,” Bones replied quietly. Dean had to remind himself that this was actually a woman walking and talking with him. As odd as it was to see a 6 foot man acting all soft and kind towards him, he appreciated Catherine’s efforts to make nice with him.

“Does it pay well?” he asked, regaining his friendly tone.

“Not at all,” Scotty chuckled, somewhat bitterly. “Money is hard to come by.”

He frowned. “I’m sorry. That’s not easy.”

“No, I suppose it isn’t...but I’ve got Sammy. In the end, all that matters is that he’s still alive, and still sticking with me.”

Bones smiled warmly. “Amazing what having someone you care about at your side can do for the heart, huh?”

Scotty cast a glance back at Catherine, who wasn’t necessarily smiling, but looked warmed by what she’d heard anyway.

“So, wha’ exactly ‘re we lookin’ fer?” Dean piped up from the back.

Scotty shuddered, not particularly enjoying the sound of his voice tinged with a Scottish accent.

“Dead things,” Scotty said, stuffing his hands in his pockets and tossing a casual smirk in his new companions’ direction.

“That’s specific,” Catherine muttered.

“It’ll be small...animal bones, teeth, probably some blood. Look for odd markings. I might be able to tell you what they mean.”

Bones shivered. “So dark...”

“Sister, dark is what I live for,” Scotty said.

“Where do you suppose we would find such things?” Catherine inquired.

“Let’s start with the living quarters. The other group went to check the work places, and Sam and Sulu are going to do an overall sweep of the place. I hate to say it, but we’re going to have to tear through the rooms as quickly as we can. We don’t know when the witch will strike again.”

“How can we know that a witch is doing this?” Catherine asked.

“Because,” Scotty sighed, “it’s happened before.”

“It has?” Bones exclaimed, obviously surprised.

“Yeah. Some teenager found a book of dark spells and managed to switch bodies with Sammy.”

“So, was the teenager a witch?” Catherine asked incredulously.

“No, not necessarily,” Scotty answered, “but we found out that he was working with one to make the switch.”

Catherine nodded slowly, pursing her lips. “Where do you usually find these things?”

“In homes. We’ll try to knock out a few rooms at a time, since there are four of us. Check underneath mattresses, in drawers, any nook and cranny you can think of.”

“So we’ll each take one room at a time?” Bones interjected.

“Yes.”

He nodded. “Okay. There’re about 100 rooms on each floor. Divide that by 4, and that means we can each search 25. How long does it usually take to search a room?”
