"C'mon Rosie! This is gonna be fun!" Elle sat on her horse and looked down a little hill. She turned to her friend. "See that li''l' river? I just don't get why Pa thinks is to dangerous to swim in it... It aint even deep..."

Rosalie shifted on her horse, "I dunno Elli. My sister told me this story once 'bout a guy who went to swim in a river that looked calm, but it wasn't under the surface and he got swept away. They never found his body." She scowled, and then muttered "'Course she could have just been makin' it up to scare me."

"She sure made it up! Besides, who tells this is gonna happen to us? I mean... At least our bodys would be found 'cause the streem ends in a dam down by the city." Elle giggled and started trotting down the hill.

Rosie rolled her eyes, "Well that's a big comfort," she spurred her horse after Elle's.

"C'mon! It aint dangerous! I promise!" Elle's horse reached the stream and she slid down it's back, took off her boots and dipped her feet into the cool water.

While the two girls discussed, Rowdy, who had rented a horse at the library stable, arrived at the ranch. He knocked on the door of the ranch house, hoping that Walter was at home.

Walter opened the door. His eyes widened in surprise, then he grinned, sticking his hand out for a handshake, "Rowdy! Good to see you! What brings you around to these parts?"

Rowdy grinned and shook Walter's hand.
"Oh, we've just finished a drive not too far from here, and I thought, I could visit you and the girls, as I promised them."

"Well, the girls are out. I think Rosie said they were heading down towards the river. If you're not too tired from your trip, we could go out and surprise them," Walter replied, with a mischievous look.

Rowdy shrugged agreeing and grinned. "Let's go."

While that Elle had jumped into the river. She laughed and splashed water at Rosie.

"Come in! Or are you afraid?", she called teasingly.

Rosalie scowled, "Am not! You just watch me, ya brat!" Rosie took off her shoes and waded determinedly into the water, until she was almost waist deep. She braced her legs. The water rushed around her, pushing against her almost like an angry living thing. She gulped, "Elli I think we shou-" and then she fell, and disappeared beneath the water with a nearly soundless splash.

Elle screamed out. After a few seconds of shock, she began to search for Rosalie. She helt her breath and went under water, but she couldn't find her friend. When she got up again, she coughed and screamed out again: "Rosie! Rosie, where are you? Answer, Rosie! Please!"
