Chapter 6
The bell rang, the day was over.
"What do you think happened to Laura?" Emma asked, putting her lucky trombone, number thirteen, in her locker.
"I have no idea, but I think we-"I was cut off by Emma's gesture. I turned around.
"Hi guys!" Annabel said cheerfully. "Do you know who the cheerleading captain is? I need to ask her when practice is over."
"Oh, you're a cheerleader?" Emma said with a fake smile.
"Yeah, I need to get home but six, I need to know when we'll finish-"Annabel stepped to the side looking at something. "Oh, yeah! It's Dana! I gotta go, see you tomorrow!" Annabel ran off.
Emma watched Annabel walk away with the other cheerleaders. "Ok, so do you want to find out what happened to Laura?"
"I think we should, but who are we going to ask? Annabel? I don't think she even knows that no one can find her cousin!"
"Well," Emma smiled at someone behind me. I turned around. "Hi, Sarah," Emma said.
"So, Emma.... I see that fake smile of yours again. You know I know you pretty well, it's only been five years..." Sarah joked and smiled. "So what's the problem?"
"What problem?" Emma fake smile got worse.
"Emma," I whispered loud enough that I knew Sarah could hear. "Tell her."
"You," Emma whispered back.
"Hi, guys. So what'ch doing?" Rachel walked up to us.
"They have a secret they won't tell me!" Sarah joked.
"Gasp!" Rachel laughed.
"You guys, it's about Laura," I said finally. Their laughing stopped. "When we were in band class, Laura wasn't there. Miss Halloway got a call from the office saying they didn't know where she was."
Emma continued for me. "We told Miss Halloway that we saw her with Mr. Anderson. Then, after she hung up the phone, she told us that Laura just forgot to go to her class for fifth period. But, we think she was lying, and they really don't know where Laura is!"
"Does Annabel know?" Rachel asked.
"Maybe," I said. "But, would she be here if her cousin was missing?"
"Where is Annabel then?" Sarah asked, her voice sounded shaky.
"She went to cheerleading," Emma replied, just as worried as Sarah. "She told me and M.J that she had to be home at six o'clock."
"I have to go to swimming now, what do you want me to do?" Rachel asked.
"We'll do it."
"What? Do what? Are you just going to go to her house and tell her mom she's gone? What if her mom doesn't know?!" Sarah cried.
"Shh!" Emma grabbed Sarah's arm. "Do you want the whole school to know that nobody can find our best friend?"
Sarah and Rachel stood still.
Emma slammed her locker, just like Laura had done that morning, grabbed her back pack and my arm and stormed away.
