Another technique I have used is writing the dialogue first. I know it may sound a bit wacky, but it does help. When I was still in the planning stages of my story, I used this alot. Wanting to get some work done, I acted out scenes in my head with my characters speaking. Normally it would when someone was angry and ranting. When the would dialogue just flow.
I obviously added who said what, and now these days I will open a file containing dialogue, and I would simply just added actions and descriptions. It felt so wonderful to get even the tiniest chapters finished because of this technique.
Just a heads up, this technique is not for everyone, some chose to use a different method and others won't get how this would work, so here's a little demonstration.
In this scene, are two of my characters, my side and main, the main character is trying to concentrate while the other annoys them.
So this researching coming along well? X
Some how. Y
Do you believe the sword, absorbs memories when it kills someone? X
It's written on an ancient wall, by an ancient mad man. Y. I don't have to believe it, but, it's the only clue we've found.
*silence*
There's something that has been bothering me. X
That funny, there's something bothering me too. Y
It's the things from the other world. They are so much stronger, smarter then all of us. How are we to defeat an army of them. X
Frankly, I couldn't give more of a damn of what's bothering you. X
Somebody's cranky. Y
Somebody needs to shut up. leave me alone. XNow all I need to do it add in actions and descriptions, which I'm not going to show you, because it will spoil the story.
