The night sky covered all, it's inky blackness providing cover for the terrified individual weaving through the dense forest underneath it. Stars were the only guide they followed as they desperately tried to out run their pursuers, as they crushed a tiny piece of parchment in their hand, for it was the key to everything.
"Di Maris," They whispered. The scent of the sea intruded into their nostrils, invigorating them. They pushed themselves to run faster.
"Deos Terrae,"
They could feel the tremors through the ground as their pursuers made up lost ground.
"Deos Caeli," The whispered words carried away on the wind and a bright light lit up ahead.
"Deorum Ig-"
"SHE'S OVER THERE!"
"DEORUM IGNIUS!" They shouted as they waved a hand behind them. A wall of fire began to spread, cutting them off from their pursuers.
They continued to follow the light until they saw a clearing up ahead. Relief flooded their being as they knew saftey was up ahead.
The tranquility of the open space was interrupted by the terrified prey clashing through the foliage. As soon as they saw where they were, they dropped to their knees and picked up a stick, drawing a hasty circle around them. They placed the parchment in front of them and raised their arms towards the heavens. With that they began to chant.
"Venit tempus
Nunc tempus est
Ut simplex nuntius
Utere me ut tuo vasi-"The pursuers burst into the clearing. A few foolhardy ones immediately rushed them only to be blasted back as soon as they touched the invisible barrier around them.
"Fools!" Their leader snarled as he watched some of his men attend the injured ones.
Knowing that they didn't have much time, they continued to chant.
"Trans spatium et tempus
Invenire quattuor kismat
Ut salvum nostro fata hominum!"A bright light immediately blinded everyone in the vicinity with swirling blue, green, red and white colours as the parchment levitated in the air before disappearing without a trace. As soon as it disappeared, they collapsed in a heap and their protective barrier crumbled. The leader of the pursuers was the first to recover and he immediately went over to the limp figure, picking them up with ease and shaking them roughly.
"Where is it?" He spat.
The small person in his grip coughed up blood and laughed.
"Don't know." They wheezed.
"What do you mean?" He demanded.
"Gone. You can't... stop... them... now..." They coughed.
Enraged, the leader put a hand behind their neck and broke their neck before dropping their lifeless body like a sack of rocks.
"We need to go. Now." He said gruffly.
A small boy ran up to him.
"What's wrong sir?"
"The prophecy has been set in motion. We need to get ready."
And with that, they left the clearing and a limp body behind
