How are we going to make this work?

If only I'd met you sooner; when you were living so close to me.

Now we are finally meeting for the first time, knowing it will also be our last.

Duty calls us both into the roles chosen for us by society; a fighter, a provider.

Right, when we found that love we'd thought only existed in fairytales, duty demands we leave it.

And when that final boarding call comes, we'll be 5000 miles apart.

Nobody is stopping you, just walk away, my mind tells me.

Can't you see that he is the one for you, my heart convinces me.

Everything becomes blurry as I try to think.

"I won't ask you to wait for me," you tell me with a saddened smile.

Silence washes over me as I look into your auburn eyes.

Next thing I know, I'm placing my head against your chest, holding you in a gentle embrace.

Overriding all the airport noise, your heartbeat echoes through my body and soul.

There is nothing I'd rather hear, nowhere I'd rather be than here in your arms.

After all those years I finally found you; my other half.

"Please, promise me you'll stay safe during your military service," I beg you.

"Right now I can't make any such promises, and you know that."

"Of course I know that, but can you blame me for wanting to meet you again in one piece?"

"Better than never having met you at all."

Last boarding call for the flight to Amsterdam.

"Even if I have to wait for two years straight, I'll wait."

"Many things can happen in two years, for now, you'll have to take care of your parents. And who knows, maybe next time we'll meet will be in Amsterdam."
