"You made me leave my house at 7 in the evening to go jewellery shopping?" I asked incredulously as we park in front of Macy's.
Let me clear up. Macy's is one of the best jewelry makers and they have been making jewelry for our family ever since my grandparents moved to the States.
"Not just jewellery shopping, ring shopping."
I don't get speechless often, but this did the trick. "Ring?"
"Yes Nick ring. It is something you wear on yo-"
I cut him off. "Don't tease me Lucas. Why do you need a ring?"
"To propose for marriage."
"To whom?" wow, I was full of stupid questions I already knew answers to.
"To Maddy, of course. Who else will I propose a marriage to?" He stated the obvious, but I had so been hoping that I would, for once in my life, be wrong.
"To-" that bitch? I shut my mouth and just finished the sentence silently. I did not want a fight, especially over that stupid girl. I don't know what is wrong with me, or her, but I always get a bad gut feeling about her. Also, we must not forget how she has told me multiple times to not come between her and my brother. She said that a "bratty kid" can't stop her from getting the "biggest catch" she could. Her words, not mine.We both get out of the car and walk into the store.
"Hello ma'am, si- uhh sir" she stuttered once she recognized my brother. "H-how may I help you both?"
"We are here to choose a ring. Maybe you could get us Edward"
"Veronica, Lucas. You are here." a booming voice came from behind us. We turned to see Edward and I went up to him to hug him.
"How is Macy?" I enquired about his wife.
"She is up and running around, still blasting my ears off with all her shouting. I'm telling you, you have to visit us soon because she needs another person to boss around." he joked.
I laughed and promised him that I would visit soon.
After Luke had exchanged greetings with him, we went into an inner room.
"So, what kind of a ring are you looking for? Vintage, classic, modern, sleek?" he asked us.
"I don't kn-" Luke starts but I cut him off.
"What about modern? I think that would be good. And please show us some flattering designs, not simple ones."
I may not like her, but I do know what she likes, so I better help Luke out. However, I know that she will jump at the opportunity to marry him, be it any ring.
We look at a few designs before I pick out one. It is pretty huge, and looks all out; I won't be caught dead wearing that thing but I know Maddy would die to show it to the entire world.
Luke pays for the ring and we drive back home. The drive is pretty silent, just like the rest of the evening. We don't even go for dinner, just straight to my home.
He stops the car and turns towards me, opening and closing his mouth a couple of times. I sigh.
"Best of luck, and do tell me how that moron likes the ring." I say and start opening my door.
"Nick, you don't speak like that about my fiancee." he chastised me. What am I, five?
I turn back towards him.
"To-be-fiancee." I bite back. "And why not? Last I checked this was a free country."
"Why do you have a problem with her?"
"Who does not have a problem with her. She is a bitch. Period. Even mom does not like her. Wait, did you ask her about this?"
"No. And I don't need to. This is my life."
"And we are your family you retard." I snapped at him.
"Well, by the support I am getting, I am doubting it." he bit back.
"What do you mean, Luke? When have we not supported you?"
"Well, how about now? Why can't you guys just accept Maddy? She is such a nice girl."
"Is so fucking not. Why can't you get that through your head?"
"You know what, you just need to spend some time with her."
"I did, and ended up with slushie all over my dress."
"It was an accident. How many times do I have to tell you? She even apologized."
"First, why do you sound like it was such a big thing, her apologizing. And second, she never apologised. You did."
"Same thing. Just let bygones be bygones. I love her, she loves me, end of story."
"She. Does. Not. Love. You!"
"Then what? Power? Money?"
"Very much possible. You are the most eligible bachelor in States, after all."
"She is not that low! That was a rhetorical question. How can you even think like that?"
How about, logical reasoning? Obviously I don't say that out loud. Since I remained silent, Luke spoke up.
"I think all this problem is because you don't know her. She is a very responsible and caring girl." he said, trying very hard not to shout.
"She studied in NYU for two semesters before dropping out. How she got into NYU in the first place, I don't even know. But the point is, she is not responsible...... I have seen her wild, doing drugs, joining frats or whatever shit."
"But she changed. She stopped all that."
"The drugs? Of course. Had to start her modelling career. Wasn't that why she ditched college? But the parties? I am not sure that is out of her system yet. The only change is that the crowd is a lot more posh, all thanks to you." I snap.
"You are being irrational. She has changed. She is not the same woman she had been in college."
"She has not changed. No one can make a complete 180° just like that."
"But you did! What about that? Or are you saying that even you have not changed." Wow. That hurt.
"How can you throw that to my face? Of course I have changed! But this is a different case, she is no-"
"Of course, if it is about you, everything is fine and dandy, people should sympathise with you, and look at you with awe because you changed! Isn't that what you want." his voice gets pretty loud.
"N-" I try to speak but he is on a roll.
"But God forbid there is another person in the same situation. We just can't understand, can we? That person just becomes fake, liar or whatever!" he is practically shouting at me now. We have never fought like this, and I can feel my eyes sting.
"That is not what I meant. Madd-"
"Would you fucking stop it Nick! What is wrong with you?! You were not like this!" I feel a lump in my throat, but still attempt to speak.
"Luke-"
"Don't you Luke me! You know what? I don't want to talk to you! You can get out."
"Just-"
"I. Said. Get. Out. Right now!"
I stared at him, not understanding what was going on. When I felt my eyes watering, I quickly turned, got out and slammed the door behind me. I was on the steps of the lobby when I heard a door slam shut. I turned around and saw him kick the car before leaning on it, burying his hands in his hair. I fled up to my home before he could spot me.
We both are in pain, but we both think we are right. Whoever stated that "the ones we love have the ability to hurt us the worst" was very true, and I hated experiencing it.
