4 years before the wedding
I was walking down the street in the April showers, it had looked like I just took a swim. I was walking home from work which is at least a 15 minute walk, all because I got into a stupid fender bender. While walking past the tall buildings of New York the rain stopped above my head, but I could still smell the rain. I looked to my left and seen a handsome man standing next to me.
"Do I know you?" I asked.
"You don't," he smiled. I smiled back and stopped.
"Well thank you, but I'm ok," I said.
"A pretty girl like you shouldn't be stuck in the rain." All I could do was chuckle.
"Thank you. Do you maybe wanna get some coffee?" I asked.
"I would love some. Only if you'll let me pay."
"Oh... No it's fine, it's on me."
"No no, it's on me. You may have asked but I want to." He smiled a smile I couldn't say no to. I felt this instant connection and wanted to get to know him better.
"Alright..." I said looking for a name.
"Sam, Sam Price." He answered sticking out his hand.
"Bea." I shook his hand.
"Well Bea, last name, where do you wanna go?"
"I know this really good place on the corner here." We walked in and the barista, Alice, looked at me and smiled.
"Hi Bea, who's this?" She asked with a smile. Alice was an older woman, maybe around mid 50s. She had never married and never had kids, she was the most badass person I've ever met.
"This is Sam," I smiled. "Sam this is Alice."
"Nice to meet you Alice," Sam smiled.
"You have a cute smile. Well Sam, what will you have?" Alice asked.
"I'll just have a hot chocolate please."
"And the usual for you?"
"Yes please," I said.
"Alright you guys go sit, I'll be right there." Me and Sam went and sat down in the corner where I usually sit. The café is called Ground Café, it's small and that's why I like it because there is barely any people ever.
"So, hot chocolate, bold choice," I joked.
"Yea, I never really liked the taste of coffee, or tea," he said.
"Fair enough."
"So, what do you do for a living?"
"Right now I'm an office worker trying to sell people office supplies, it's very boring. What about you?"
"I'm a website designer, also pretty boring."
"Really? That's sounds more fun."
"It does but when you build something people look at all the time and don't get paid enough for it, it sucks."
"Makes sense." Alice came by with our drinks then she whispered to me how cute Sam was. I brushed her off then she laughed and walked away.
"What's your dream job?" Sam asked taking a sip of his hot chocolate.
"I want to be a writer, I write on my spare time," I said.
"That's so good. One day you'll have to let me read something."
"Sure, what about you? What's yours?"
"Ok, so it's sounds really lame but I want to be an animal cruelty investigator."
"That's not lame at all. That's really cool. I have a dog, he's a German Shepherd, his name is Archie."
"Ah I bet he's super cute, I love dogs, and cats, I also love reptiles I just really love animals, I want to help them."
"That's sweet." During our whole coffee session we laughed and shared stories from our childhood.
We talked for hours and hours only for the rain to stop and the street lamps to come on.
"Hey kids, hate to break up your date but it's closing time," Alice said.
"Holy shit, I lost track of time," I said looking at my watch.
"Me too, I hope I didn't steal you from anything," Sam said.
"Oh no, you didn't."
"Are you just going home? Want to split a cab?"
"Sure." I said bye to Alice and we got a cab. Sam's stop was first when the car stopped he looked at me and smiled.
"Thanks for the fun night Bea, would you like to do it again this Saturday, maybe going somewhere different?" Sam asked.
"I would love to," I smiled. I saw relief in his eyes. I guess he thought I might reject him. "Here's my number, text me the time and place and I'll see ya there."
"Alright, see ya later Bea." He smiled and got out running up to his house. When I saw his house I was shocked, it was huge! The cab started to move again and I sighed smiling to myself.
