Sam and I have now been dating for 6 months at this point and getting serious. I still haven't told him anything about my mom or the fact I have depression, which is becoming much harder to hide. Sam and I were lying in bed on a cold morning. I was cuddling him and he was caressing my shoulder with his finger up and down.
"I wanna meet your parents," Sam blurted out.
"What?" I asked.
"Yea c'mon I wanna have Thanksgiving with them or you can come to my house I don't know I wanna meet them," Sam said. I sat up and looked at him in the eye.
"On one condition. I get to meet your parents."
"Done, tell me when and we can go over there."
"Wow that was easy," I smiled. He hugged me and rolled on top of me causing me to laugh out loud. He kissed me a couple times then got out of bed.
"Beatrix Taylor I want you to get up and call your parents right now, tell them we are coming over for dinner tonight," Sam said putting his pants on.
"Samuel Price, you call your parents and tell them we'll be coming over tomorrow," I said back. He smiled and walked out calling from my house phone.
"Mom? Hi it's me... Just wanted to let you know me and my super serious girlfriend are going to come over for dinner tomorrow night... Tell them I miss them too. Alright thank you mom, love you too bye," he hung up the phone and looked at me throwing the phone onto the bed.
"Who do you miss?" I asked before calling my dad.
"My brother and sister, they are both pre-teens now," Sam said.
"Good to know." I dialed my dads number and after two rings he answered.
"Hey honey, how are you doing?" Dad said.
"I'm doing good. So tonight if you don't mind could me and my super serious boyfriend come over for dinner? He wants to meet you," I said.
"Yes! I've been waiting to meet Sam," he said excitingly.
"Alright dad love you bye, thank you." I hung up and did a mic drop with the phone while looking at Sam.
"Alright I'll be right back," he said coming over to me and giving me a quick kiss then proceeded to get fully dressed.
"Wait where are you going?" I asked.
"I need to get your parents a present, do they drink?"
"Yes."
"Alright be right back!" The door slammed and I fell back onto the bed, figuring out ways to try and tell Sam that my mother is dead without making him feel bad. I got dressed myself and made breakfast. I put on some music and started dancing around, a while later I heard a voice from behind me.
"I love you," Sam said. I stopped what I was doing but didn't turn around right away. Not only did he scare the shit out of me, he also said he loves me for the first time.
"You what?" I asked.
"Oh shit I'm sorry, it just kind of came out," Sam said apologizing.
"Sam, you have nothing to be sorry about. I love you too." I turned around and hugged him tight. We shared our moment over the smell of burning toast but I didn't care I was too happy to let go of him.
A couple hours later we were getting ready to go to my dads house for dinner. We both wore something casual and nice, Sam bought him some wine. We rang the doorbell and I was already freaking out.
"Hi bumble bee!" Dad said as he flung open the door.
"Hey dad," I said. We walked in with Sam standing behind me.
"And you must be Sam! I've heard nothing but great things. Come in come in!" He closed the door behind us and walking into the kitchen.
"Wow dad, looks nice in here," I said looking around.
"Yea, I cleaned it," he said.
"Mr. Taylor you have a beautiful home," Sam.
"Oh Sam, please, call me Lewis."
"Thank you sir. We brought you this," Sam said handing him the bottle of wine.
"Oh thank you. Well Bea, don't just stand there, give him the tour, I need to check on the food." I gave Sam the weird eye and we started walking around. We were already standing in the kitchen, then we moved on to the dining room, to the living room and then upstairs to the bedrooms.
"This one was my room growing up," I said pointing to a door. Sam opened it and seen all the nerdy posters from when I was a teenager.
"Wow you are such a dork," Sam joked closing the door.
"Over there is my dads room and then the bathroom." We walked back to the kitchen and seen dad working so hard. My father is not really someone who cooks for people, he has his couple friends he goes to the bar with and stuff but that's about all he does. I'm proud of him for trying.
"Need any help sir?" Sam asked.
"No, no you kids go wait in the living room," he said scrambling.
"Go wait, I'll be right there," I said to Sam. I walked over to dad and put my hand on his back.
"I know bumble bee, I'm trying," he said taking a deep breath.
"I'm not upset, I'm so happy you agreed, doesn't seem like Lewis Taylor to cook for anyone," I joked.
"Ha ha, go sit, it's almost done." I kissed his cheek and seen Sam watching some infomercial.
"Hows it going?" Sam asked.
"Good, I've never seen him do this," I said.
"It's good he cares." About 10 minutes later he put the food on the table.
"Alright kids, dinner time." We walked over and sat down.
"I made spaghetti, something I've always been good at, Bea's mother taught me how to make it," dad said. And then it dawned on me, I never told dad I haven't told Sam about any of that yet. I gave dad the wide eye and he caught on.
"Oh where are my manners. Let's open this," dad said grabbing the wine bottle. He poured us drinks and we finally started to eat.
"Oh my god Lewis, this is brilliant," Sam complemented.
"Thank you, my mother-in-law taught my wife, and my wife taught me and Bea," dad said.
"I'll have to compare the two," Sam said flashing his charming smile. After a while we finally finished our meal after we had a couple great laughs. We all helped with the dishes and sat down in the living room talking again.
"So Bea, you've been taking your pills right?" Dad asked. It got real quiet and Sam looked at me confusingly.
"Dad, could we talk privately for a sec?" I asked. We walked into the kitchen and I just stood there in shame.
"Beatrix Taylor you haven't told him yet?" Dad asked.
"No! Look I'm sorry I don't know how to tell him," I said back upset.
"You need to or you're going to look like a real douche, it's going to start looking weird when you get up early to take your pills. It's better to tell him then him getting mad at you."
"Ugh, your right, I'm sorry."
"It's ok, you just probably need to go and explain." He gave me a hug and left me alone to go talk to Sam. I walked into the living room and he was standing by the fireplace, I felt turned on by just looking at him. He was looking at the picture that's been there for 14 years. It was my mom, dad, brother and me all at the pier in Los Angeles.
"Sam... I think it's time we leave. I'll talk to you in the car," I said. "Dad!"
"You guys heading out?" He said walking to the door.
"Yeah, sorry about that," I gave him the all clear smile which he gave back.
"Alright bumble bee, love you," he said kissing my cheek. "Sam! It was so great to finally meet you." Sam went in for a handshake but my dad hugged him tight, catching Sam by surprise.
"Nice to finally meet you too sir," Sam said. We left and walked to the car. When we got in I instantly started to explain.
"Sam I'm sorry I never told you before, it's just hard to talk about this openly but I'll answer any questions you have," I said. I started to drive but took a little detour.
"What pills are you taking?"
"Anti-depressants."
"What for?"
"Depression."
"No, I know that but how are you depressed?"
"You'll learn that soon."
"Alright then what about your brother." I went quiet and bad memories started to pop up again. I shivered but answered.
"I hope he stays in that mental hospital he needs too." Sam realized it bothered me so he didn't ask anymore. We finally pulled up to the secret destination and walked Sam down the path. We finally came up to her stone cold grave. He looked at the grave stone and seen my mother's name written on it.
"This is why I'm depressed." He sat down at the grave and just stared at the tombstone as if he was inspecting every letter.
"It's nice to meet you Missus Taylor. You have a lovely daughter." Sam said. I laughed and cried. When we drove back home I explained everything to Sam.
