I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. I couldn't even hear Kit's screams. My eyes were stuck on her. Eva's head was bloody around her right temple. It looked as if she'd been smashed with a large rock or something. The scarlet blood dripped across her pale face in streaks like rain down a window. Her past bright blue beautiful eyes had faded like an old fabric. Eva's expression was frozen in time- her eyes wide, her mouth in a position of terror. Her school uniform was muddy and torn.
I tried to analyse my friends' faces. Ivy was a statue. She'd never really liked Eva and never approved of her flirtationship with Jenk but she honestly looked as broken as a shattered looking glass. Kit's eyes were wider than the ocean on a cold winter's night. She was holding Jenkie's hand but trying to hide it. Alice Jenkins was still red in the face. I think she was ready to get serious with Eva Casten before she... before this. I couldn't take it anymore. I ran.
"PENELOPE!" I stopped and fell over, inches away from the front door.
"I can't do it, Ivy. I can't..." The only action she took was holding me in her arms and stroking my long dark hair. Calmly. Surprisingly calmly. Strangely calmly. Oddly calmly. "I can't even look at her." My heart was racing faster than my legs on Sports Day. I felt it stumble and skip beats, my own body malfunctioning.
"Who would do that? Who could do that?" Ivy didn't speak, she only showed a face of pity. "I'm going to do it." I pull Ivy off me.
"What?"
"I'm going to find the murderer and.."
"And what?" I look up at my best friend. My brown meeting her green eyes as my decision is made.
"I'm going to find the killer and kill him."
