I was alone in assembly as Kit had never shown up today. I couldn't see Jenk in the hall as I walked to the third row looking for Robbie Flynn for answers. No luck. I sat in the corner, I didn't want to speak or be with anybody right now. All I wanted to do was go home.
"Greetings." Mrs Kerr stepped onto stage. "I am sorry to pull you out of class today but this is important. Important for everyone in this room." Click. a picture of Eva came up on the projector screen. "This is Eva Casten. A kind girl. A friend to many." Click. An image of a missing poster. "She was last seen 3:15pm Friday." A collective gasp from the audience. I felt my heart beat faster. It seemed to be creeping up my throat. "Some police believe she's been-" Click. "-murdered." I knew I was going pale. I knew I looked nauseous. I could hear my heartbeat. The world began to spin. Mrs Kerr became a mess of colours like a painting. I needed to leave.
"Any information needs to be reported to the police. It is illegal to with hold information from the authorities. I repeat: illegal." I ran out of the hall and pushed the door open. I got into the fresh air but it didn't help. I put my hands on the wall and gagged. There was the slam of a door and someone ran out. Oh fuck. They didn't deserve to see me like this. Whoever it was I wanted them to leave. I puked out some drizzly pale thin liquid as the person held my hair back. It was only the Oasis I'd drank that morning but it still felt horrible. My body hadn't consumed anything since yesterday lunch, and even then it was just a sandwich. I spat the rest out and sat with my back against the wall. I finally saw the person.
It was my crush.
