"To be honest, I think you understand that the actions and attitude of my client are outside the realm of normalcy." His attorney said with a side smile.
"Being abnormal doesn't mean you're mentally unstable." I snapped at him.
He stopped his pacing and looked at me with a smile. "What would you consider mentally unstable behavior then?"
"Objection." The DA said, standing to his feet. "Her idea of what is mentally unstable or not has nothing to do with the actual mental state of the defendant. He's reaching."
"Sustained." The Judge replied, then looked at Kai's lawyer.
"Fine." He sighed. "You were together for three years, and it ended almost two years ago, correct?" I nodded."Then would you say that compared to the three years you were together and his behavior over the last several months were different and rather strange?"
I hesitated before answering...yes it was different then when he was with me but that didn't change anything. I looked over to the jury who were starting at me, and my heart started to race.
I must have taken too long for he spoke again. "Your honor please ask the witness to answer the question."
The judge turned to look at me and opened his mouth to speak, but I beat him to it. "Yes. It was different. Keep in mind Sir, that I was with him at the time...so of course it was going to be different."
"Had he ever indicated that he was capable of any type of violent behavior?"
I took a deep breath and let it our through my nose. "No."
"Never? Not in the 6 years you have known him?"
"The last year I've known him he has physically assaulted me, threatened me, stalked me, and killed my unborn child. So yes...he has been violent during the time I have known him."
I was getting irritated at this point...he was going in circles asking me the same questions.
"So the last year you've known him...were you with him?"
"No."
"You have been dating and living with Mr. Jung that we just met?"
"Yes."
"So it wasn't until my client found out that you were with another man, that all these abnormal behaviors came out?"
"To my knowledge."
"Huh." He said as he stopped pacing again and turned to me. "Sounds like a broken heart to me. Did you know that sever emotional trauma can actually alter a persons behavior?" He walked over to his desk and grabbed a folder handing it to the judge. "According to a recent study that...you and a colleague of yours did less than 14 months ago...therapy is no longer the best way to handle extreme emotional distress."
"You're looking too much into it." I said again.
"But this is your work...your theory...that a friend of yours tested and provided alarming proof that your theory was correct. Isnt that why you won the Modern Break Through Studies award?"
"I may have."
He nodded. "I see. Well then in your profession opinion, Doctor, wouldn't you say that a heart break can lead to extreme emotional stress."
I couldn't help but to stare at him, my eyes lingered behind him where Kai was smirking at me. I could feel the burn from his gaze, and I was starting to get nervous. Was he going to use my won studies...my own work...against me?
"Studies have shown that there can be irreversible damage to a person based on emotional trauma alone, yes."
"And in that same study that you, Dr. Kim, and Dr. Hudson submitted; doesn't specifically go over that therapy sometimes is not helpful...that sometimes the trauma is so deep that the only way to actually help a person is medication."
