I walk out of my Science class and start heading towards English with, of course, Chris at my side. He turns to me smiling, "I can't believe we've been here for a whole week and we haven't even gotten beat up yet! And we haven't even been teased that much either!" I smile. I love seeing him this happy, and he's right. High school is much better than middle school, plus the teachers let us get away with a lot more. I'm starting to think this won't be so bad after all. Some Juniors walk past us and shove me to the ground. "Haha! Losers!" They all walk off laughing. Chris drops down next to me. "Are you ok!?" He says while grabbing my face. I glance at the Juniors as they walk off. Chris helps me up and I curse them under my breath. He rolls his eyes at me and leads me into English. Maybe it'll be worse than I thought. I mean, we've only been here a week. You can't determine how the year will go from that.
We sit down at our desks in the back corner of the class. The teacher starts talking and I only hear "Hello class, today we will be working on improving your...." and the rest is just a background noise as I think. I stare into space and think about anime. I mean, how cool would it be to be able to be in an anime. It would be really cool, but it would be kinda scary. I wonder what I would look like in anime. I wonder what Chris would look like. If we were in an anime, would I leave him? Would I still need him? I look over at Chris. I smile, and he turns to look at me. "You good?" I nod and he turns back to the teacher. After a few seconds he looks back at me. "You sure?" I chuckle and nod again. "Alright then.." He says slowly while turning back to the teacher. I can't imagine life without Chris. He's my best friend, I would never leave him. We need each other, plus if there's anyone who knows how to survive in an anime, it would be the weird RPG master next to me. "Hey, Chris?" He turns to look at me. "Yeees...?" "We're a team, right?" He grabs my hand. "Of course. Always have been, always will be. Plus, I can't go anywhere without my trusty lie detector/freaking google translate over here." He squeezes my hand and winks at me. I giggle. I feel bad for everyone else in the world. Their lives must suck. They all have fake friends. Friends that question them and judge them, friends that aren't there for them, friends that abandon them when they aren't "cool" anymore. That must be terrible. Well, I guess they'll never know what that feels like, and I'll never know what it feels like to not have that. He let's go of my hand and I turn to the teacher. "Does everyone understand?" She asks the class. "Yes ma'am." "Alright, now go put it on paper. My eyes widen. Chris nudges me and whispers, "we only have 5 more minutes left, I'll work with you on it after school, k?" I smile and nod. He reaches over to grab something out of his bag. He pulls out his phone and ear buds. He hands me one and puts the other one in his ear. He presses play and we watch 5 minutes of Lucky Star. I glance at Chris who I can tell is silently fangirling over how cute the anime girls are. He's biting his lip and his eyes are wide, plus he's bouncing up and down which is why I looked at him in the first place.
The bell rings and I can see him mouthing cuss words at the bell as he puts his phone away. "Time for technology!" I look at him as he hauls his book bag on his shoulder. "Why do you always carry everything with you? We have lockers for a reason, ya know." He regains his posture and gives me double thumbs up. "Because I don't wanna slow you down by taking too much time at my locker, I wanna be ready to go once you're done." I start walking and he quickly jogs up next to me. "Why are you so weird, Chris?" He shrugs his shoulders. "It's called having fun. You should try it sometime." I raise an eyebrow. "Oh yeah?" I challenge. "Heck yeah, girlfriend!" He yells. "First one to the door gets the first pocky stick!" I yell and start running towards the door. He gasps and does his little Naruto run towards the door. I get there before he does and I watch him run at the door. I expect him to stop, but he doesn't and ends up running into the door and falls backward onto his back. I roll my eyes. "Are you ok?" I ask. He sticks his arm up and gives me a thumbs up. I grab his wrist with both hands and pull him up. He grabs onto my shoulders once he's standing and regains balance. "Man! I wanted the first pocky stick!" I roll my eyes and give him a gentle shove. "But, that was a good start." We both smile and walk inside.
In Technology class, we don't have assigned seats. You're allowed to sit anywhere you want, and all the desks have computers on them. This is Chris's favorite class. He loves everything having to do with technology. That probably explains why SAO is his favorite anime. That and the amount of RPG games he plays. We sit near the front and we turn towards Mr. Harpers. "Good evening, class." He welcomes us as we all start logging onto the computers. "Wait, don't log onto the computers. You won't be needing them today." We all look at him. This was new. Chris looks at me and I just shrug. "You are my favorite class, so I've decided to do my experiments on your class." Faces lit up around the room, especially Chris's. I hear whispers break out about what they thought it would be. I try to see if there's anything in the room that would give me a clue. I read Mr. Harpers' expression and I could tell that no one had guessed it yet. I looked back at Chris and I could tell that he was waiting to say something but knew what I was doing and didn't wanna interrupt me. "You can talk now, I'm done." I said with a smile. His eyes immediately lit up and he sat up a little straighter. "OMG GIRL, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW EXCITED I AM!! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! I WONDER WHAT IT IS!! WHAT IF ITS LIKE A VIDEO GAME THING OR SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE HACKED OR A..." I sit and listen to him rant with a smile on my face. I'll occasionally glance at Mr. Harpers who will also, every now and then, glance at Chris as well.
A few minutes pass by and everyone is finishing up their conversations. Mr. Harpers clears his throat. "Class, please quiet down." The whispers slowly get quieter and eventually vanish. "Now that everyone's quiet.." Mr. Harpers begins, "Today we are going to be experimenting with VR." People start getting excited and talking, and Chris yells as loud as humanly possible, "SWORD ART ONLINE!!!!" Mr. Harpers laughs. "That's exactly it, actually." Chris gasps and his eyes widen and light up brighter than the Sun. "We will have VR headsets that have been designed where you will be sitting in your chair and the headset will use your brain and connect your brain to the brain of the character in the game." So it basically SAO/Avatar. How wonderful. "THAT'S SOOOO COOOOOL!!!" Chris yells. I shake my head and put a hand on Chris's shoulder. He turns to look at me and then gives me the biggest hug ever. I pat him on the back. Mr. Harpers passes out the headsets, and when we get ours we immediately put it on. We put in the headphones that are attached to the headset and the last thing we hear is Mr. Harpers voice, "Good luck!" A mix of bright colors blind us and swirl around in colorful patterns. They all come flying at us and then all we see is darkness.
