I woke up the next morning to a bright light shining through a window. Opening my eyes groaning, it took me a second to realize where I was. Remembering the days events that happened yesterday quickly ruined my good mood. I looked around the room I was in and saw that I was laying on a bed in one of the guest bedrooms of my grandparents house.
The room was quite simple with a nightstand next to the bed with a lamp next to it, and a horse painting by the door. I don't remember much from last night, I faintly remember my grandmother leading me into this room and falling asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
Walking over to the bay window facing the front of the house, I pulled back the curtain and saw that there were horses and cows in the pasture. I've never really like animals besides Luca, so this is something that will definitely take a while to get used to.
"Courtney!" my grandmother called. "Are you awake yet honey? Breakfast is ready!"
"Yeah give me a few minutes and I'll be down." I replied calling down the stairs. I could smell the coffee brewing along with the smell of pancakes. I put my wild blonde hair into a messy bun on top of my head along with my glasses. I usually put in my contacts but I wasn't in the mood today.
Jogging down the stairs I met Luca at the bottom who was jumping up and down in excitement. I let him outside to use the bathroom while I went to the kitchen to get some coffee. I grabbed a plate and piled it with pancakes, along with eggs and some bacon.
My usual breakfast consists of a kale smoothie along with a granola bar, but new place new me I guess.
"Hey honey, this is Benjamin. He comes over every other day to help around on the farm." My grandmother said, while introducing me to a boy with brown hair and blue eyes. I will admit he is easy on the eyes. He stands at a height at about 6'3, and has a light dusting of freckles on his cheeks and arms. His blue eyes pierce mine as he says,
"Hi, I'm Benjamin, but most people just call me Ben." Smiling he reached forward to shake my hand.
"I'm Courtney, it's nice to meet you." I say, shaking hands with him. His hand is firm yet gentle at the same time. Even though he looks intimidating from his height, I feel like he is gentle and kind with everyone.
"Are you going to help out on the farm today?" Ben asked me, curiosity shining in his eyes.
"I don't think so, not today. I still have to unpack from the move, and I don't like dirt. Or work, for that matter."
Laughing, he walks over to the coffee pot and pours himself a cup of coffee. "I guess that's just something we're just going to have to change."
He gives me small little wave, and then walks out of the back door saying goodbye to my grandmother. Finishing my breakfast, I put my dishes in the sink and turn on my heel to go upstairs when I hear a throat clear from behind me. Turning around, I see my grandmother standing behind me with her arms crossed and eyebrows raised.
"Forgetting something?" She asks me, looking at me expectantly.
Looking around the room confused I reply, "No, I don't think so. Why, did I leave something on the table?"
Rolling her eyes, she turns and points to the sink. Still confused I look at her and shrug my shoulders. "What about the dishes?" I ask.
"Since you will be living here, that means you get to help out around the house. Which means doing your own dishes and laundry. And when you're all settled in you will be helping out around the farm too." She tells me, emphasizing the word 'will'.
