Kiri: Jake had whispered for me to meet him by his locker after school was let out to discuss where we wanted to study. I hadn't understood why we couldn't just discuss it now. Then it hit me. He didn't want his friends to see him with me. I couldn't deny that I hurt to know that...but I guess I couldn't be surprised.
After third period, Spanish,
It was lunch.
I met my friend, Saige at our table, away from everyone else. Away from the haters, the cursors, the bullies. "Hi Kiri! Um....why do you have silly string in your hair??" Saige asks me. "I still have that in m-my hair?! I thought I got it all out!!" I say quickly, combing my fingers through my hair. A few kids at another table I hear snicker. "Am I getting it out?" I ask. Saige frowns and shakes her head. She scoots over to my side and carefully grabs it and untangles it from my hair. "Thanks. My brother shot me with a bunch of it before school." I sigh heavily. "Well, its all gone!" Saige says, smiling with sympathy. I nodded. "OH! Guess what happened in Science?" I say. "Ummmmmm no idea?" Saige laughs. "Mr. Alvich asked me to tutor JAKE KINGLY!" I whisper as quietly as possible. Saige's eyes go wide, and she leans forward toward me, now on the other side of her table again. "REALLY?!" She whispers. I pick at my food, then take a bite of the tuna fish. "Do you think he'll just ditch you?" Saige asks me. "I'm not sure...its most likely he will. He didnt seem to thrilled when Mr. Alvich said that." I sigh, and laugh a little. "OH Mr. Alvich also said, that Jake, had to walk me to Mr. Alvich's class each day to make sure I wasn't late!!" I also tell her quietly. Saige's eyes widen more, which I didnt think was possible. "WHATS MIA GONNA SAY!?!" Saige whispers, her green eyes flickering with fear. "I dont think she knows...at least not yet.." I mutter. Saige's eyes look behind me, and she looks down, her strawberry red hair falls over some of her face. "Speaking of the devil...she's coming this way...!!" Saige warns me very quietly. Uh oh. I glance behind me to see Mia, and some of her friends walking this way. "Oh Kiri, I thought you would like my Sweet potatoes!!!" Mia dumps her sweet potatoes. She dumps them. Right. On. My. Head. "they match your eyes!" Mia sneers, and she and her friends walk away laughing. Saige stares wide eyed. Sweet potato drops down my head and face. The orange of it falls on my tray, on my food, on my lap, and behind me. I cover my face. Sometimes...I really hate my eyes. I feel like I'm going to cry, but I dont. Mia did this kind of thing once a week. I just take a deep breath, grab my tray, and say to Saige, "I'll see you in Gym and Art."My voice is flat and emotionless. I then turn and walk away. Eyes are on me and mouths are laughing at me. I glare ahead. I walk over Mia's friend's foot in their attempt to trip me. I know Jake's eyes on me, looking at my eyes. I dont look at him, I dont do anything. I just throw away the rest of my lunch, set down my tray, and shove open the cafeteria doors, and slam them behind me.
Jake: She wouldn't look at me, as I stared at her as she walked by our table. My girlfriend had dumped sweet potato on this sweet, friendly girls hair. Why did Mia do that? Though those were my thoughts...I still laughed along with the people at my table...who were laughing about Kiri.
I saw Kiri again in gym when I entered with two of Mia's friends, and Carson. Kiri's hair was clean of Sweet Potato. She was talking to a friend. Her friend glanced at me, said something to Kiri. Kiri glanced at me for one moment than turned away just as the coach blew his whistle. "Okay, were running laps today kids! Whatcha standing around here for? Go! Run! Run!" Mr. Calorti, the gym teacher blew his whistle again. We all started the same time, Kiri was in head of everyone by a lot. She was very fast. After a few laps, I noticed one of Mia's friends, Jemma, had slowed, and stopped to get a drink of her water. That wasn't the only thing she was doing. Kiri was focused on running, so Jemma took as an a chance to trip Kiri. If I tried to warn Kiri, it would've been too late. Kiri tripped over Jemma's foot, and fell forward slamming and sliding across the track a few feet. By the time Mr. Calorti saw, Jemma had started running again, and he had missed it. I glare at Jemma even though she wasn't looking at me. She was looking back at Kiri and grinning. Something inside me made me mad at Jemma for doing that. "Miss Knight, are you okay?" Mr. Calorti asked Kiri as I passed her. Kiri got up, and dusted off. She was scraped up a little. "I'm fine." she says. "Why dont you go visit the nurse?" Mr. Calorti says, and Kiri nods and heads off.
I dont see her again til Art...she enters the classroom, and her friend, whos name I think was Paige rushed to her. "Are you alright?! I CANT BELIEVE JEMMA WOULD TRIP YOU LIKE THAT!" Paige exclaims. Kiri shrugs. "I can. This kind of thing happens all the time, remember? And I'm fine..just go a little scraped up. Nurse patched me up, and then she had me rest becuase I hit the ground hard." Kiri says quietly. All the time? This kind of the thing happens to her all the time? Paige stares at Kiri kind of sadly. Kiri offers a smile, and Paige smiles back. They put on their smocks. I put on mine, and look to our teacher, Mrs. Lumi. "Today we will be working on light and shadow!" Mrs. Lumi announces and she begins to teach us.
Later...after class is over...and school has been out for a few minutes, I wait by my locker for Kiri. Soon she shows up, looking emtionless. "Do you want to work at my house or your house?" I ask her.
"Yours...we can work at m-my house....next time...if u dont want to do your house all the time." She answers. I wonder why she stuttered when she said her house. But I dont ask why. I just say okay to her, and nod. None of my friends are on my bus. Kiri sits an empty seat a few rows back in the bus, instead of with me. I'm not sure why.
And I cant figure out if I'm relieved or sad.
