Jake: One of the help, Thomas, told us dinner was ready so me and Kiri headed away from the TV and to the dining room. My eyes widened in a sort of panic as I entered the dinning room. My father was sitting at the end of the long table, reading the newspaper. I swallowed hard. "Father?" I say hesitantly. I notice for a brief second that Kiri is sort of hiding behind me. My father looks up. "Oh. Jake. Good...we need to talk a—.." he sees Kiri. "Who's this?" His eyes are narrowed a little.
I take Kiri's hand and pull her out from behind me to my side. "This is Kiri Knight." I tell him.
Kiri makes eyes contact with him briefly for a second then looks at her shoes again. I got the impression she was kind of shy, that or she was just in shock from being in the same room as the most successful man in the state....
"Pleasure to meet you Kiri. Quiet interesting eyes you have if I may say." My father says. They way he said it made it sound like an insult or like he was a creepy evil scientist. His eyes looked over, he was judging her. And every part of me hated it. "You may not say." I muttered, narrowing my eyes. "Did you say something Jake? You know it's not in manners to mumble." My father tells me.
Honestly sometimes I couldn't decide if I liked it better when he was here or when he wasn't. Kiri I think had heard my muttered sentence because she was looking at my confused. Me and Kiri went to sit down at the other end of the table and Gloria brought us out the fettuccine.
It was awkward and silent as we ate. Not the way I had pictured.
My father just randomly shows up, unexpectedly. Okay. Fine. Your never home. When you are home you don't even tell me. I felt so mad and hurt inside. I felt like orphan in some ways.
And what did he want to talk to me about??
I then realized what it was——-my grades...
I knew he would wait til Kiri left, and now I never wanted her to leave.
After dinner, me and Kiri quickly escaped to my room. "Dinner...was...um great! Thanks.." Kiri comments awkwardly. "Yes, the food was. But don't lie about the rest, your not the greatest at it." I laughed lightly, and she smiled sheepishly at me. She looks out my window, it's dark. "Ooooooo your yard is in covered in fireflies!!" Kiri says smiling. "Wanna go outside and catch some?" I ask. Kiri smiles, "Sure!! But...uh....probably can't...it's cold and I don't have a jacket..." she says. "You can barrow a sweatshirt." I offer, she tries to refuse, but I throw her a sweatshirt. She smiles softly and whispers a thanks. She slips the sweatshirt over her. She looks good in it.

Wow...so far two unexpected things had happened in the last hour...My father came for once and I liked Kiri in my sweatshirt.

Kiri: By the time we were outside, I had forgotten the way Jake's dad looked at my eyes with judgement. I laughed as I caught firefly around the yard. This was so much fun! The last time I had done this was with Paige when we were 8 yrs old. Jake's sweatshirt was warm, thick, and extra big on me. "Queen of the fireflies! Kiri Knight!" Jake laughs. "Yes! Know kneel!!" I snicker. He kneels and I catch a firefly and then walk over to Jake, and let it crawl off my finger onto his nose. Jake laughs and stares at it, as it rests on his nose for a moment then flys away. I twirled around the yard under moon and firefly light, almost forgetting Jake was there. I saw a firefly close by and went to catch it. "Kiri watch out for the water!" Jake shouted to me. I didn't realize that the firefly was over the water in fountain and I was about to fall into it. I stood on the there edge, one foot already out toward the water and my hand reaching for the glow bug. Jake grabbed my hand, laughing, and pulled me backward. I blush in the dark as I'm pulled into Jake, we both almost fall over. We burst into laughter. A firefly flys over his head and I go to grab it but it's to high. "Here!" Jake chuckles and moves around me, picks me up by my waist and I reach for the firefly and am I able to catch it. "T-thanks!" I smile. Jake nods and grins, setting me down. "What time is it?" I ask him. Jake checks his watch, "8:00 PM."
"Oh no...I'm supposed to be at Paige's house right now!" I say, and quickly pull out my phone. "Awwwww.....hmmm well is she coming to pick you up?" Jake asks.
I send a text explaining that I was still at Jake's to Paige's.
Paige replies saying she and her sister will pick me up at Jake's house. "Yeah, they are." I say. Jake nods, "Well we should probably go put away your stuff." Jake says, I nod, and we head back inside.
After my stuff is all packed up, Jake coughs into his hand, "so."
I look at him. "I'll meet you by your locker tomorrow after school?" He asks. I nod.
Not before, not in the middle, no looking at each other in the hallways, when everyone is gone.
Because we both knew we couldn't be seen with each other........we had formed an forbidden friendship.
