The Goils from 'Hattan

Chapter 1

The sound of booming thunder and pounding rain was all that I's could hear. I's curled up further under the metal fire escape tryin to keep as dry as possible. I's was only about 10 at the time. “Hey,” I hear a soft voice come from near where I's was. I's try hide myself as far under the fire escape as I’s could. “Hey it's alright I's not gonna hoit you.” I's peak out a bit still not wantin to be seen but wantin to see who it was. “The names Jack Kelly. What's yours?", I's look over this newcomer’s appearance. He was about my age maybe a few years older with long light brown hair and kind brown eyes. I's decide to tell him my name "Avangelina Barnes,”. He smiled at me for a second but then his smile fades "What are you's doing hiding in da streets?”. I move further out from under the fire escape as the encounter continues. "I's don't have anywhere to go,” I's look down at my dirty clothes and hands. "You's don't gotta family?”, I's just shake my head still looking down. "Well, you's can come stay with me then!” Jack exclaims with a blinding smile I's smiled back and stand up from where I's was hiddin.

As I's was walkin with Jack making small talk I's found out that Jack was 2 years older than me. He also told me that he was a newsie and that he was takin me where all the Manhattan newsies live. After a bit of silence he lets out a chuckle. “What?" I's ask. Jack smiles, “You know what you's remind me of . . ." I's raise an eyebrow waitin for an answer and he continues. “You's remind me of one of them porcelain angels they put in da store windows 'round Christmas ‘cause you’s so small and fragile. I's thinks that's what I’s gonna call you, Angel.”. I's give him a look "Are you's serious?",I's shake my head. “I’s no angel, Jackie boi.” he laughs and puts his cowboy hat on my head. "You’s alright Angel, you’s alright”. I fix the hat on my head as Jack stops in front of a large brick building, "Welcome home, Angel.”
