a/n: took me a while to come up with how I wanted the future to be for this and I came up with one so here ya go.

LUKE'S POV.

Spring was rolling around the corner and a 'spring cleaning' was always apart of the family agenda. So as the kids went to school, we decided to clean out the attic. The amount of useless shit that was kept up here during the years of moving in was astonishing. Where did this all come from?

The heat wasn't really that bad until two hours into the cleaning when everything was out of the boxes and the laziness was starting to take over my mind. "Hey, I'm gonna' go make us some lemonade or something. Be right back."

"Alright," I continued to open a few more boxes but it seemed as if I zoned out for a moment since I tripped on one of those creepy garden gnomes and knocked some boxes over. Curse these long legs.

Papers were scattered all over the floor but as I got closer, I noticed they weren't just any papers; they were lists. Pink ink aligned the white paper that I memorized over the years of having them. And that familiar spark erupted in my stomach.

But I heard her coming back up so I shoved them in my pocket, continuing on with this horrid cleaning.

 -

It was about three in the morning in Sydney which meant two in the afternoon for her. So, after hours of deciding whether or not to call, I did.

The outside was cold as I sat on one of the benches on the front porch as the dull ring of the phone connection rung in my ear as I awaited her to answer.

 "Hello?"

"Hi uh- it's Luke. Luke Hemmings."

"Oh my god! Luke, how are you? It's been what- almost twenty years?"

"Yeah, time goes by pretty fast. How are you?"

"Wow, where do I even start?"

I chuckled, she hasn't changed. "Start the day after you denied my proposal."

 "Luke.. please, don't."

"No, I don't mean that in a rude way. I just want to see how you've been after that."

"Well, after you did well- that, I finished college, got all four degrees and am now happily living my life. That's basically it."

 "No marriage?"

"God, no, Luke. I told you that marriage wasn't anything for me. Not yet. I still need to get my life in sorts after everything."

 "It's been twenty years."

 "Exactly. Anyways, how are you?"

"I'm good. In Sydney, four kids, lovely wife, good job, nice house, still have your letters, gotta' boat-"

 "You still have my lists?"

 "Those lists are my fate."

"And I remember when I was yours, too."

 "Imagine if things were different."

"It's a little too late to get my hopes up on changing it."

 "But imagine if it was."

"Luke, you'll always have that place in my heart but right now, you need to go on with life. You've always been tangled in commitment. Let me go.''

 "I-I can't."

"Please, Luke. I'm allowing you to."

 "How's the brain doing?"

"It's not as bad as before. I got some treatment..."

 "I'll always be here, okay?"

"I know, Luke. But if anything happens, you'll have my lists."

"So, I guess this is goodbye."

 "I suppose so. Goodbye, Luke."

 "Bye."

"I love you lots l-like tater totts."

I was crying and so was she, "I love you, too."

 And the line went dead.
