Aquarium:

The aquarium by the bay was where I had grown up. The exhibits with beautiful fish and exotic corals and powerful mammals fill my childhood memories. Excitement roiled within me at the news that my mother, brother, boyfriend, and I were going to go back to visit the old aquarium. I jumped around in joy at the thought, to my mother's obvious amusement. We all clambered into the car and drove down to the bay. I had heard that the aquarium had developed a new exhibit: an open ocean wall. It was a giant glass wall that backed to the bay and allowed you to view the oceanic creatures in their actual habitat. I was so pumped.

The trip down seemed to stretch an eternity, but we finally arrived. I jumped out of the car enthusiastically and dragged my family along with me. We snagged our tickets greedily and I bounded down to the wall. It was glorious. The kelp forests, the sea floor, the aquatic life, and, to top it all off, there were two pods of whales drifting by the wall. I was in heaven. We spent hours observing the ocean and the people and the whales. I paid special attention to the deepest portion of the wall where the whales were swimming up to the glass. With my limited knowledge, I identified the two pods of whales as humpbacks and some type of aggressive white whale such as a sperm whale.

It's hard to describe what happened next. At the deep end of the wall, where the white whales were, there were some rowdy college-age students who seemed to be teasing the whales. I watched in horror as one of the white whale breached over the wall, stretched its jaws wide, and clamped down on the torso of one of the students. As the whale slipped back over the wall, the boy's torso went with it. His legs, all that was left of him, buckled and slumped to the ground, a ruby river of warm blood burbling up from the jagged remnants of flesh and pooling on the concrete. I was paralyzed, only able to watch as the people I had come with rushed down to the body. Blood coated their features, making it seem as though they were the source of all the gore. They were crying and the blood was pooling. Everything went dark the moment I saw the whale breach once more.
